Calling Scottish Dwellers...

Reading some of the replies its no wonder that we want independence.
Again as for the idea just being dreamt up in the last year that is completely wrong, Scotland wanted an independence referendum in the 70's but were talked out of it by the Tories.
Close the border if you like at englands cost, we arnt trying to keep you out, where will you all go for your weekends away except Wales or overseas.
16-17 year olds you will never know for sure what they vote as you cannot trust the polls and after the vote there is no who voted what figures to look at.
As for Scots who have emigrated, some of these people are the most partiotic you will ever meet and most have left because of the state of the UK, so in short most would definately vote YES.

Patriotic approach may blind the issues and only see the romantic side of it. Most of the emigrated (and all that I know) Scots are very well educated, hence the ones I know are without exception against the separation because they are not blinded by just the positives, they can see the negatives as well.

Scotland is not overcrowded for a reason - there is not enough there to sustain itself. Tourism alone will not pay for free hospital care and education. Is a future financial bailout and be classed like Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain as the poor relatives really worth it?

What exactly will the independence bring that the Scots do not have today? What will really change?

Agreed, things may be ok for a decade or two, until the decline in north sea oil becomes apparent through a financial downturn. Then what?

I'm merely guessing at what may or may not be influencing factors, and sharing that my opinion is that a No vote is the safe choice at the moment.

Nictrix - I'm intrigued to know how you know most of those Scots who left Scotland would be Yes voters - you must know a lot of people. I'd also highlight the 70s is nearing on 50 years ago - that's a few generations that have passed through, it's not the same campaign.

Another thought i had - with the rising interest in UKIP, and another Independence movement, that probably has an impact on the Independence ideology UK wide, and i suspect has influence Scots to be more open to the idea.

My biggest fear of Scottish Independence is the issue of defence of the rest of the UK. I can imagine that the Russians will be courting Salmond and he'll be loving all the attention that he's getting from his suitors. Then when he's gone, what will be the future?

You are right I do not know thousands of Scots who have deserted the UK to get a better deal of life but the ones I have spoken to all have said yes. Much the same I suppose for the few people that anybody knows that have left the country and have said they would vote No, its not really representative of anything really. But it is wrong to say that all who have left faviour the "union"
It really is a subject that divides people when it shouldnt.
There should be no bad feeling whatever the outcome.
Its just a shame that England cant gain independence from London and let westminster get on with it on their own.

Why does England need separation from Westminster? The answer to all problems is not through becoming smaller insignificant states.

Not to mention that it might become rather expensive to borrow money for Scotland ….

Well someone complained earlier about being under a Tory rule, I would bet theres a high percentage of people vote for them in London.
Maybe I am wrong, people with money dont need to worry either way they will still have lots of it.
Im sure this thread was more about the roads in Scotland than independence though.

I am so bored of the whole independence thing. I've wanted them to vote Yes but I am convinced it will be a no vote by a comfortable margin. Then we get to the worst case scenario - Devo Max yet we still get their MP's voting on matters that don't concern them or their constituents.

Nothing against Scotland but I consider myself to be English not British. Time for permanent divorce I think.

Agree divorce it is as suggested earlier

But do you really think MPs vote on anything other than the party line - it wouldn't matter if you has Martian MPs voting on English issues - they would fall on the party sword all of the time

Politics - masquerades as democracy - in reality it's an elected dictatorship

The whole thing has really ticked me off. I suspect a lot of people south of the border, like me, identify primarily as 'British'. I am English, Scottish and Irish. It infuriates me that a jingoistic attitude has been promoted in Scotland that could take a major part of my national identity away from me. One thing that has really emphasised to me that this is about Salmond wanting his own private fiefdom is the talk of the prospective constitution. SNP have said no trident in Scotland. Whatever you think about nuclear weapons, why do SNP think they get to arbitrarily decide on these things? If they scrape independence then I sincerely hope SNP fail to get power at the first election.
All this nonsense about not paying their share of the national debt if they don't get currency union too. If you want independance, have it! That doesn't include carrying on relying on the Bank of England! As if those are the only two negotiations too. They can't have have currency union, so they won't pay the debt. Ok then, they don't get any of the other assets then! They don't get military equipment etc etc etc and I wonder how many buildings and sites in Scotland belong to the British government? I wish someone would just put Salmond and Sturgeon back in a box.
He worst of it is independence will screw all of us in the south too, the uncertainty will seriously impact on the economy, and I don't think many realise this.

*rant over

What happens to the Union flag?
You can keep it, we have one of our own :D
Where is the Welsh part on the union flag anyway?
There is Scotland, England and Northern Irelands flags built into it but there doesnt seem to be any green for the Welsh flag.
