Buying a Z4 M

Hi All, a returning member here.

I've being away from this forum for a good 18months, a few cars later and full of excitement I'm looking to return to Z4 ownership.

I have to say I have missed this forum as the chat and people are perhaps the best on the net, so a big thumbs up!

I have the opportunity to buy a Z4 M Coupe, 56 plate, 75k on the clock, black with red leather.

Just want to get some thoughts on how much I should be paying for this car, it's a private sale so no warranty and any potential problems/issues I should look out for?

Thanks in advance.

A

Welcome :)
If its in top notch condition with full BMW or specialist history I'd say around 15k in the current market for a private sale.

That sounds about right, depends heavily on spec and maintenance history though. Additional details will really help us.

£14k I think. A forum member only a month or so ago picked up a 2008 plate car(I think 2008) with 77k miles on it for £14.5k and one previous owner - bought from a BMW dealer with warranty and road tax. Granted his timing was just right :)
BUt if the car is right for you then........

That's some fantastic help guys, thank you very much.

I'm seeing the car Monday so will check the service history and speck.

Any mechanical issues or such like I should watch out for?

Broken rear springs firstly! Owned two coupes and replaced three springs in total.
Discs for wear and occasionally a caliper can start seizing which can sc*w a front pair. Don't think it's a common issue but had an issue with mine and by the time I realised the discs were already buggered
Check underside of rear hatch - under the hatch itself. It can start corroding but still covered under the 10 year body warranty
Think a search may reveal a checklist of general Z4 issues (buyers guide).

Id like to see the figures for actual sale prices which would then give a more definitive outlook on true values

In addition to the above, you might want to take a look at the 'M Market Watch' thread on here, a lot of the adverts linked will now be taken down but you'll be able to see people talking about prices etc.
I picked up my M about 2 weeks ago, from a non-BMW franchised dealer (Evans Halshaw), 64k miles (high for this type of car but v v low for the year), 2006, FSH and statutory warranty, for the princely sum of £11.7k.
The coupe is commanding higher prices at the moment though, and possibly always has done and will do.

I'm looking at getting back into a Zed also and have spent the last month or so following prices. With 75k miles I' d expect the car to be advertised privately at around £14k.

But that would be true for all figures....ever. Still comparing like for like.

I'd probably knock about £1k off to arrive at a realistic assessment of selling price. Likely to be at least that on a dealer car and a bit less on a private sale? Difficult to be specific because it depends on so many factors doesn't it?

I think one person on here got £3k off of a dealer car recently. I'm sure it was up for £22,850 and they said they paid <£20k but >£20k with shortfall insurance added on. I've definately never had less than £1k off dealer car and I've usually gone for competively priced cars to start with.

Good useful data!
Do you take your figures from the Z4MC/R categories only or do you also take into account the ones incorrectly listed under the non- ///M categories.
It amazes me how many adverts get listed in the wrong place. Currently there are 12 cars for sale under Z4M Roadster, 7 of which are MC's

If it's the one I'm thinking of, didn't he know someone who worked for Sytner who helped him get a better deal?

Dealer pricing can vary - different marque but the two main UK dealers for Land rovers used to have a totally different pricing strategy on sticker price vs deal price . Guy Salmon ( Sytner) would price high and Stratstone price low ... but as you negotiated you could always get a lot more out of Guy salmon than stratstone so i would find on like for like cars they would converge on price .

So I see Mr Wilks point - but the data is harder to come by - there is the what did you buy yours for thread on here which gives some idea.

Perhaps we should run a poll - asking versus paid price and then publish the mean in threds like the price index .

Yeah, but you paid £2k to clean the engine bay  :P

I think it's sometimes done intentionally to increase views or something, or some just don't know :).
I received a personalised video of a Z4 M recently and the dealer called it a Z3 M Coupe. I would share it for a laugh if it didn't contain my full name :). Probalby just a verbal mistake but also didn't show me the underside of the hatch I wanted to know about and instead showed the boot area on main body of the vehicle (the part that doesnt rust).

I did think it may be some kind of marketing strategy, I've noticed the BMW main dealers list their Z4M's in the non ///M category but will sometimes switch them for a few days.
