Need Advice: Buying My First BMW Z4 – What Should I Look For?

Hi everyone,

I am planning to buy my first BMW Z4 and would love some advice from the experts here. I am considering models from around 2010-2015 due to my budget but I am open to suggestions.

1.What are the common issues or things I should check before buying?
2.Are there specific models/engines you would recommend (or avoid)?
3.Any tips for a first-time Z4 owner?

I have heard amazing things about how fun the Z4 is to drive and I want to make sure I am making the right choice. Any advice on what to look out for during a test drive or inspection would be super helpful.
I also read this topic on this site https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php-salesforce-admin but I could not find anything helpful.

Looking forward to your insights. Thanks in advance for helping a newbie out. 😊

Cheers,
[Maria]

Hi Maria, I bought a 2012 Z4 in February. This post has some useful info https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=145959

Definitely check under the carpet in the boot where the hydraulic pump doesn't raising the roof is. It sits on a foam cradle that can get waterlogged if there are any leaks and damage the pump.

I used an app on my phone -Bimmerlink with a Bluetooth Veepeak adaptor. This is user friendly and you can quickly see any fault codes that are present. Definitely check that the roof operates smoothly.

Most of us avoid 19 inch wheels and run flat tyres as they aren't great with our potholed roads. Most will have been replaced with 18 inch wheels and standard tyres by now but it's worth checking.

Cargurus.co.uk shows how long a car has been for sale and shows any price changes. Which can be useful for negotiating a decent price. It's definitely a buyers market but not all sellers have set realistic asking prices.

Welcome to the forum Maria.

2010 - 2015 Z4s will all be E89s and as I've only had E86s I can't offer much insight, but hopefully others on here can.

A lot depends on how hard you drive, how often you drive, and your maintenance budget. Could you share some of that ?

Fo-sho, if it has auxiliary gauges mounted on the dashboard, run from that one !
