Build a supercheap air scoop from your OEM part

Problem is, the original scoop is as said on page 1, in the back of the grille, just before the radiator where air gets collected in a high pressure zone. Also, the stock scoop is shaped to function as a venturi. By adding the long tube which is small in diameter and omitting the venturi, you actually decreased the pressure inside your airbox, reducing any ram air effect that the stock setup already has. You did add a snorkel, which in the E36 and E39 are used to add some noise reduction, but even then, they do have the funnel shaped venturi which enhances the flow.

So far I haven't read about rain issues with the Ram air scoop for example, so I'm not really worried as much.
Or have I missed any threads on this forum?

I have a much more professional version cast in CF.......... given to me by a forum member

Perhaps a little harsh...... :?

Naaah... I can take some critics. If you don't do anything, you can't do anything wrong. But cj10jeeper is welcome so show us how to do better :poke:

Apologies if the criticism seemed harsh. Wasn't my intention.

I didn't say I could do it better, but a piece of plastic tubing of such narrow bore placed towards the rad opening won't do anything material in collecting or compressing air.

I was given one that has been cast in carbon fibre that replaces the original trumpet and bolts onto the same point mount point. I developed it a little further. It has a front facing air intake area of about 5x the design and facing direct into the airflow. As you can see from the photo it extends to the centre of the grille and inside mates up to the airbox. I still maintain it achieves little to nothing because it defeating the OEM high pressure area design, but leave it in place as it's not detracting either.

Here's a snapshot of it which was hard to get as it's almost invisible. (used to be red until I went more subtle and see it's now wearing stone chips). If you're really interested I'm happy to unbolt and photo it.

I suppose that it makes more sense to have a better design for a 3-litre engine and your probably right too. made one for a 2.2i and it probably rams enough air into the filter. A bigger scoop would have a negative effect on my smaller engine. :)

Cool idea and good effort, but doesn't really fit with the BMW mantra... and my proper one makes no difference... :?

Don't really feel any difference either from RPI scoop. tend to agree that pipe design won't improve air flow into engine but what do I know :)
