Build a supercheap air scoop from your OEM part

I have been working on another mod: building an air scoop from teh OEM air scoop (if you can even call it like that). Here's a short write-up of what I did :)

So for those who didn't know, this is what the OEM scoop looks like. You can find it behind the right kidney grill. You have to pull out 1 plug on the bottom right and then give the whole thing a good pull :)

I wanted to use the OEM part to keep it simple and to keep the original mount points. So I cut a round hole in the OEM scoop:

I cut a hole because I wanted to mount a simple plastic drain tube (left-over I had laying around) on the OEM part:

Putting it back in the right place, gave me a rough idea where to cut the pipe:

After cutting and sanding the edges, this is what it looks like:

I put a LOT of glue on the inside as well as a piece of plastic cut from a lid of an olf plastic box I wanted to throw away. I have chosen for a purple part, but any color will do :P

And this is what the final result looks like (before painting) behind the right kidney:

In the meantime I have spraypainted the whole thing red, as I wanted it to be visible. Of course you can spraypaint it matte black to make it look more OEM

As the paint takes AGES to dry, pics of the mounted scoop will follow later :)

Good work fella!! I done a similar job on my Elise-cost me under £20 And gave a great induction sound!! This & the quad-I'm liking your efforts, keep us updated on the sound once the paint drys

What's it like when you're steaming along the motorway in the pouring rain, does it soak the filter?

That would worry me too. You really don't want to get water in there. Otherwise excellent mod ingenuity and improvision at their best!

Haven't driven in the rain yet... I will check it when I do :)
But I have read on other threads that some have even tested air scoops with a hose... so I guess it should be fine. But I will check!

looks like grey drainpipe stuck inside your grill... :poke:

That's what I felt too  That's why it got a coat of paint :D
I will probably mount it tonight... working on another mod for the moment

ummm it will be interesting to hear the induction noise, Could you put some small holes on the bottom of the pipe to allow rainwater to drip away?

Surely a little water won't kill the car?

I know that the GruppeM filter for the EP3 civic type R used to suck a certain amount of water as it was situated in the scuttle panel drawing air from over the bonnet.

I was under the impression that total or near total submergence was required for a hydro lock.

I'm not convinced by it, as the top upper corner where the air intake is, is a high pressure zone and the point it's at is not, except perhaps at high speed. I have a much more professional version cast in CF given to me by a forum member and if I switch between it and the standard I feel or hear no difference.

In terms of rain I wouldn't worry. The airflow goes into the lower part of the airbox where it will drop into the deeply recessed bottom and drain or evaporate off, while air goes upwards and through the filter before entering the engine.

You guys worry over tiny things lol. My old engine bay in the Evo, Notice the position of the filter, it had 3 ducting pipes running right at the filter from the bottom of the car under the bumper - ran in heavy rain, snow and sand.

A little rain won't harm the filter - thats what its there for!

I will say however, that the ducting idea isn't a bad one, but it won't do much for a ram effect as its just too small a pipe.

Actually, it's already facing slightly downwards for that same reason. If any water comes in,it should flow directly out again.

Concern ove the rain is because of the issue a few years back with Espace's & Peugeots that sucked water through the air intake, abiet they were going through standing water... & blew the engine up, literally.

Average cost was at least £2500 to fix these cars, so if this tiny thing doesn't warrant your attention your shout

It doesn't really make much more noise than before as I already have a K&N filter. But I did notice that at higher speed, the exhaust seems to be more quiet. Don't know if 1 has to do with the other but it seems the engine is more quiet than usual at higher speed... Could be in my brain though :P
It doesn't seem to do much, but IMHO, it looks good :D

+1

So far I haven't read about rain issues with the Ram air scoop for example, so I'm not really worried as much.
Or have I missed any threads on this forum?

Perhaps a little harsh...... :?

Naaah... I can take some critics. If you don't do anything, you can't do anything wrong. But cj10jeeper is welcome so show us how to do better :poke:
