Ill just add myself here - Left-hand rear spring broke in may 2011 6 months after I bought my 2004 3,0i. Ive been driving on it since but Ive just bought a new set of springs from eBay (for 1Euro - oooh he was pissed about that :-D). Its a standard, not M-sport, original suspension, non-lowered.
Both rears on mine replaced at different times, one by previous owner and the other today by me. Both done under AUC and subsequently BMW Insured Warranty (Comprehensive) at 78K miles.
This was the second thing I did on my 2003 when I bought it in May this year (perhaps I should have checked before I bought it ) ! Luckily all done on the BMW Insured Warranty!
I was driving along and heard a bang, I thought something had been thrown at the car!
Drivers side rear spring has snapped.
It's a 57 plate 3.0si coupe with 54k miles, I live down a half mile long dirt track, with plenty of potholes, I am surprised its managed 15k miles in my hands.
The spring was replaced under the AUC warranty. Dealer claimed it would have cost £300 to repair.
NSR looked fine. Thought it could be a broken spring as I could hear a metallic rattle going over largeish bumps, jacked the car up and the piece of spring was just lying in the bottom of the arm nice as pie. Very straightforward to change.
yes both rears , car only has 20k on it !!!
THE WIFE drives the long way to work in it now coz loads of speed humps on short cut way
major design error me thinks in the shape of the coil

Mr C - may be able to help - I bought 4 springs from Nosa a couple of weeks ago but they won't fit my car as it's a sport and his is not... If yours is not a Sport, with standard suspension, I can let you have the rears for half of what I paid for all 4, so £25 plus postage. They are not OEM, they are apparently better and only had about 1,500 miles on them before he upgraded to eibachs. I'll dig out his thread and edit this - PM me if interested
EDIT - just read your newbies intro, guessing this is a historical problem
Z4 Coupè - 3.0si
Year - '06 plate
Mileage - 46k
Spring - rear, drivers side
Didn't hear it go but suddenly became aware of the 'rattling spanners' noise at the rear on way home from work yesterday. Knew it was likely a spring because of this forum. My local indie in Brighton replaced the pair today for £265 all in. Back on the road already.
Just bought my 2003 Z4 last week, whilst removing the rear wheels today, noticed both rear springs snapped,MOT 2 weeks previous, by previuos owner, then found this thread.
