Broken Springs - List (add yourself if you've been affected)

My other rear spring has just gone, picked up whilst in for Stage 1 inspection. So that's both of the back one's replaced now...

Latest one at 32,000.

Both the rear springs on the 54 plate 3.0 roadster I've just bought have been replaced, it's done 42k miles.

I seem to recall this being a common problem on the E46 M3's too...

Not read all the pages, but has this only happened to non M models and if so, would that give an indication at component setups for M models ?

Have BMW finally given in and uprated the springs? I just had my rears replaced again today (my 3rd pair in 18 months) but these new ones appear to be beefed up and thicker. Genuine BMW parts fitted at an indy. The only alternative i can think of is if they were sent the wrong parts last time.

Do you have a part number for the new springs?

Add me to the list. 54reg 3.0se 67000 miles OSR snapped lower portion. Replaced both. In all fairness this isn't a BMW only problem
as an MOT tester (with an independant), and testing 8-10 vehicles a day, at least one will have a broken spring. Think yourselves
lucky you don't own an early Citroen Xsara, fronts normally snap on them with catastophic consequences i.e. the jaggy bit goes
through the sidewall of the tyre! Citroen on later Xsaras fitted a gaurd at the bottom of the spring to prevent this happening, but
didn't improve the quality of the sprung steel. Conclusion: crap quality steel!

Join me to the list !!

OSR Z4 2.2i
2005 55 Plate
41,600K

Think it damaged the damper on the way out!!
Replaced the spring this week ! i see how the damper reacts !!

My OSR was replaced before I picked up the car in December.
Just had it fail MOT as NSR had failed.
The first was 27500 and the second at 31000

BMW Z4M 07 reg though I bought mine in 2008 in BMW auction

Just over 10,000 miles at first MOT when the problem was spotted last week

two rear coil springs..... (both)

I bought a new Z4 in 2006 and had the rear springs replaced in 2008 under warranty, then out of warranty in 2010! Just bought the new Z4 3.0 and I hope I don't have the same issues!

Picked up my 2007 2.5si Z4 on the Thursday before Easter 2010. Part of the spring fell out two days later. Rust on the fractured area indicated it had been broken awhile. Pre delivery check AND MOT failed to find it! 42k miles by the way and bought thru a BMW main dealer!!

Hi Im new to this forum.
Purchased my Z4 2.5 03 5 weeks ago and put it in for its mot and failed on broken rear springs. Current mileage 27k! :o
What do we think is the route cause? Speed humps in the UK and not in the States?
Just moaned to my mate about it and laughed as his 04 3.0 28K has just had the springs replaced also!
