Broken Springs - List (add yourself if you've been affected)

My wife was driving my 2004 3.0i /36000 mile Z4 yesterday and she doesn't seem to see potholes, unfortunately this time part of the spring went bouncing down the street. :x

Guess I'll add myself to the list then...

August 2007 '07' registered 3.0si Coupe
Rear offside spring
22k on the clock

My springs broke justa after xmas 2009, purchased some replacements for 130 and it took 1.5 hours to fix. BMW wanted to charge me near £500.

Both rear springs fine when purchased Dec 08
Both springs now snapped

2004 2.5i Z4 Roadster
43,000 miles

Yep mines gone, drivers rear, 78k, but only had the car since 72k so not sure if they had been done before in the past.

Just experienced yet another broken spring 16 April 2010 whilst standing by the stationary 2007 Z4 coupe (huge bang)- 18 days out of warranty and just under 22000 miles. BMW refusing refund of excess on extended warranty policy. Previous 2004 Z4 2.5 had three springs go on that. Car inspected by BMW dealer 8 February last for broken springs. Thinking about obtaining data from BMW concerning spring failure rates under DPA and then contacting VOSA. Anyone else want to do the same or have gone down this route?

Welcome to the BMW world of the Z4.

Always had Mercedes, got a Z3 2.2 couple of years ago as a second fun car. No troubles at all 80k miles.
Traded it in last week 23/04/2010 for a 2003 3.0i SMG 40K loads of extras, initially very pleased great car to drive. Heard a rattle yesterday found this thread and had a look at coil springs, guess what, rear offside coil spring broken. I have removed the broken piece and shows it has been broken a while, as it is all rusty on the break surface. Passed MOT on the day I bought the car, they say it was ok then!!

Garage I bought car from are not interested, not covered on warranty "Mr Auto, Aberdare" avoid.

Also cannot understand why BMW do not stock springs, if this is such a common fault, now have to wait for repair when spare arrives.

Been driving for 40 years, never had a spring go on any make of car. I am beginning to wish I had gone with my first choice SLK 350.

Anyway will see how the next few months go.

Just had another go after only just over 10k miles. Not impressed one little bit.Shoddy doesn't cover it. :x :x

Further to my April 21 post, to which no reply, I've requested Freedom of Information Act data on Z4 spring failure rates from VOSA and had the matter referred to their Vehicle Safety Branch. Interesting that spring failure seems prevalent on European motor industry products and not those of far eastern vehicles.

Interesting to look at this topic on the Daily Telegraph's HonestJohn.co.uk website.

Interesting to find that Citroen did a recall, I am led to believe, on Citroen C5s to address the problem of coil spring failure - consisted of requiring Citroen to fit a safety shield between spring and wheel / tyre so that any broken springs would not puncture the tyre on failing.

Gren,

I don't think Mr Auto at Aberdare is correct - this is not a warranty item, it is a sale of goods issue. Goods, must be sold as being fit for purpose and there is consumer legislation to deal with your experience. Suggest youn speak to a solicitor or Citizen's Advice.

Amazed that am MOT test did not find the broken spring. Contact the Vehicle Inspectorate at VOSA who control and licence MOT test stations - no doubt, in this country, they will investigate. Keep the spring in case they need it.

Well i be dammed, just had mine replaced, NSR went, but BMW have replaced both with it being an M
