Broken Springs - List (add yourself if you've been affected)

I've had all my springs changed today after the offside rear broke a couple of weeks ago, only to find the nearside rear broke in 2 places also.
I've replaced with Eibachs.

Well I've had the run around getting quotes from dealer and locally specialists:

So far - dealer £302.85
- Well respected independent in Hessle £275.37
- Independent, former BM mechanices in Hull £247.32

I could possible shave another £26 of the cost if I buy the parts mail order from Soper and £97 if do the job myself.

Interestingly I spoke to the local dealer and was told BMW UK would not even consider a claim under £150. As my quotes are for both looks like a goodwill gesture is not going to happen, even on a 14k car. Grrrh.

Another one for the list:

Z4 Coupe 07 - 27,000, Drivers Rear Spring snapped (badly apparently).

Changed by the dealer under warranty.

Add mine to the list as well:

2005 Z4 3.0 SE
42K on the clock
MOT failed today on Drivers rear spring.

Weirdly I hadn't noticed any twangs or weird suspension noises. However I did think the other day that I had slightly more body roll when cornering.

I am going to give it a go with Scotthall BMW, but not holding my breath. Will quote this forum to them and if I get no joy, it's off to the place that did my MOT instead.

Just had an MOT fail on my wife's 3.0 Z with a broken rear spring. The car has only got 32k on the clock, but it is nearly 7 years old and it is the first MOT failure. I had to put some fuel in the car to get to the garage and noted that the last time we filled the car was at the start of November. 300 miles in 4 and a half months! We need to use this car more.

43000 miles 2003 Z4, having after market suspension added with touring suspension option. BMW stock springs are cracked.

Passenger rear - fatigue fracture at 45k. I've never seen a rear coil spring fail on any car I've driven over the last 45 years. This is my 4th BMW but first Z4. This being the lightest (weight) BM I've had there must be a design fault hear somewhere, or material issue. I have definately not been hitting any pot holes at speed neither have I curbed it and I drive very slowly over speed bumps. Just sharing my experience.

Yup, me too. 55,000mi, US 2007 3.0si Coupe, non sport package, OSR only. NSR still okay, but will replace that one too...

45k miles the car has been a wide variety of roads - all of which my e39 has been on at some time or other with no problems.

So, metallic rattle occurred on passenger rear, looked around for sources, in the end booked into garage and the Z4M is now wearing a set of new rear springs courtesey of extended warranty.

And another to the long list.......both rears broken replaced with eibachs it feels more planted with no loss of comfort just got to be carefull over the speed bumps as its 30mm lower

3 outta 4 of mine went last year. Had them done by an indy specialist - £600 all in.

Mileage was 36k on a 2003 3.0l

Just took the car for its second mot.It has 27k mls and BOTH rear springs are broken.

Advice please on where to buy (Not fitting BMW springs)

Many thanks...

alexblack13,

Is it possible to obtain std height springs for the rear only without going thro BMW dealers (Anti rip off engaged!)

06 2.5Si 27k mls and goosed springs Prev' Z4 2.5 broke the rears also..

I am going to have a big moan at my dealer tomorrow..

Anyone had any joy about getting parts or repair? This is getting out of hand. Has anyone reported/ moaned at BM uk?

Just a thought.

Mine went as well... Rear drivers side.. Replaced this week a Bowker under warranty. Car is an 07 with 20k on the clock.

Cheers

Found one of mine lying on the drive today, 54 plate 3.0i with 15k on the clock.. Going to phone the insurance company to see how much Eibachs will increase my policy by!

was looking through my service history and mine has had both the rear ones replaced with the previous owner when it had only done 7000 miles, tut tut BMW.....

I'm thinking that mine have gone, although at the moment the ride isn't majorly affected. Current behaviour is that under 'reasonable' weight transfer/acceleration I hear a knocking/creak at the rear, and during spirited direction changes the rear end definitely feels broken (the springs don't take a set, they bounce waaaay too much).

Annoyingly the problem happens at around 8pm on 29th March 2010. My warranty expiration date? Yes, 29th March 2010.

Went to the dealer on 30th March and it's booked in but is definitely 'out of warranty'. If a change is due I would hope that it would be easy enough to get them covered under a goodwill agreement (especially as they failed under the warranty period, although of course I cannot prove this).

If I can't get them covered I'll probably take the hit and go to Eibachs or similar (although I don't really care / want to lower the car). I take it Eibachs won't break as easily as the poor BMW offerings?
