Broken Springs - List (add yourself if you've been affected)

Z4 - 3.0
Year - 2004 (04)
Mileage - 88,000
Spring (NSR, OSR, Both) - NSR

NB: needed replacing when i bought it so break potentially occured at lower mileage.

Z4 2.5i
Year 2003
Milage was 49,000 when break occured
Springs Replaced - both rears (although only the drivers side had physically cracked)

Both spring broke and replaced at 37k miles under warranty. 14 months and 7k miles later, drives side went again.

Returned to dealers, who after a bit of moaning replaced the drivers side free of charge.

Advised that one rear spring had broken just before Xmas by main dealer at around 48K.
Yesterday a set of 4 Eibach Pros were fitted and other suspension parts replaced by local Indie Autotech at Warwick. Only driven home from the garage in the rush hour so far too early to say what the difference is to handling, but I am certainly liking the slightly lower stance and it is no less comfortable.

My near side rear had to be replaced at 44,000 miles.

My mate had 2 springs replaced at around the same mileage.

Supposedly the replacement ones are a bit thicker!!?

I've had one go, 56 plate Z4M Coupe on 19k miles. Was working in the garden and went in to the garage and saw this:

Quite how it manage to fall out there and not on the journey home I'm not sure, but looking at it, it seems to have sheared off cleanly, suggesting metal fatigue.

Goes in to be sorted under the AUC warranty this Friday.

Mine had first MOT on Thursday - offside rear coil spring fractured on fail sheet...new one fitted by supplying dealer.

2006 Z4 Coupe, 48,000 miles

off side rear gone today.
Car has done 82,000 miles but dont know if they have been replaced before (no paperwork to say so), prob have though going on some of the mileages people have had them broke.

Confirmed rear near side broken today, 55,000 miles 3yrs old just inside warranty :( . Has anyone had problems with dealers saying its not a warranty item ?

Please add me to the list. Bit of broken spring found on drive. Could be out of one of four in houshold. From what I read on the forum I about broken springs I decide to give the Z4 the first check. Jacked up, wheels of and surprise surprise, passengers side snapped virtually in half and drivers side bottom first flat coil half missing which was the bit found on drive. Ordered from dealer today at £86.50 each. Car is 2003, 2.5l, with 62k on clock with M-teck sport suspension. :x

And another one...

56 plate coupe with 12,500(!) on the clock. NSR completely broken but with bit still hanging inside the coil.

Time to read up on how much it will cost and how to DIY Grrrrrhhhh

And 1 more....

06 plate MR with 20500 miles. OSR bottom coil and a half.

Looking at the failed part I would say that there are no material faults at the crack initiation site and the part has failed due to fatigue....

This part is not well designed for this vehicle.

This part would fail again and again.....

I would like to replace with better however the car is under AUC warranty so Id be a fool not to let BMW pick up the cost and therefore fit another part with insufficient fatigue life!

and me... MoT failed on fractured offside rear (53 plate, 50,000 miles so it's done alright, by comparison!)

Got new part from Blue Bell in Wilmslow (£77 with 10% discount), will be fitting at the weekend
