Broken Springs - List (add yourself if you've been affected)

And Me. 2007 Z4MR @24,500 miles. Rear Near Side.

Mine went in for MOT yesterday and they found both rear springs were broken (which meant it failed the MOT obviously).

Mines a 2004 2.5SE with 108's and RFTs, mileage 42k.

They have had to order the springs from Germany, which apparently means a 5 working day wait - have they never heard of DHL FFS! My MOT runs out tomorrow.. :(

Is the car's handling affected? Can you actually feel/hear anything if the spring is broken?

I didnt notice any difference when driving, just heard a clanging sound (like a few spanners were loose in my boot) everytime i went over a bump.

I found that the most reliable way of reproducing the nose was when dropping down from a speed plateu/platform (the speed bumps that are c.4m long) with the door open (although it was driver's side, so maybe a friend stood outside listening). The loose spanners analogy is spot on, it sounds just like a couple of light metallic objects dropping onto metal; not how you'd expect.

... that said... the day after I'd booked it in for (what turned out to be) the drivers side spring, the passenger one went which (in the action of failing) sounded exactly like you'd expect: a massive "twang!" sound as though the handbrake cable had gone, only louder.

Just been diagnosed. 2005 2.0 @58,000 miles. Both sides. Blank looks when I suggested it was common to this model from the crap dealership

Just got back, wasn't a broken spring - my pass side spring was too high - odd, it was replaced anyway and now sits within tolerances.

Mines having both replaced tomorrow, left side rear sping has broken - M sport suspension 3.0i E85, MY 2003 covered 38k miles.

Will try to get some photos of the broken bits and of the unbroken spring to see if that was on its way to failing. I have no record of the spings being replaced before on this car.

Update:

Had both replaced car now sits level at the rear

On the drive home the bumpy roads seemed less bumpy and felt nice and taught again at the rear, did anybody else notice an improvement in ride quality after having both springs replaced? (m sport).

Z4 3.0i SE
June 2003
Problem found June 2007 45000 miles
Broken OS spring replaced
At same time NS spring was split so also replaced

Could speed bumps have a part in this?

Mine broke at around 40k on an 03 3.0 smg with sport suspension. Put the lot in the bin and fitted koni adjustables and eibach springs and all is good.

interestingly found the N/S front upright bent slightly whaich was knocking the camber out. Have fitted a new one and its much better - going for full geometry setup soon, so hope it will be back to factory!

All good fun.......

Found out today that the rear springs were gone, had no idea; no noises, no handling change.
Had the car since 18k can't believe that there would be no difference in ride quality!?
Haven't had it fixed yet because the garage didn't have the parts. Haven't seen it for myself, is there a way to do this easily?
