Brighter Headlights - Update

Keep your old bulbs in the boot or glove box though as the higher intensity bulbs don't last long and the last thing you want is them to go kaput in the middle of nowhere at night.

honestly you will be fine, I had never sanded paint/lights etc on car before and my heart was in my mouth but in the end it was easy!
Just make sure you use the automotive grades of sandpaper recommended, for gods sake don't use the stuff you find in B&Q, way to abrasive! :lol:
or if you get a 3M kit etc your golden.

Will do, it seems that the short life of the high intensity bulbs is a bone of contention in many of the reviews - I guess I will find out for myself :cry:
 
Okay so this might sound like a stupid question there are two lights in the headlight housing one being the main headline one being a small light. The small light also looks very yellow. Can I change both of the lights in one lamp to look white or just one?

Also due to my restricted movement in my shoulders and my arms is there anybody I can get to install these lights?

Can anybody also recommend to me white LED lights for the numberplate and interiors please ?

I have stock Xenon in a 2007 and installed clear projector lens in place of the stock Fresnel lens. The stock lens had a heavy foggy film on both sides which easily wiped off with a cloth. I noticed a sharper cutoff and slightly more intense output with the clear projector lens compared to the Fresnel lens . I did one side at first so I could compare the output with the different lens. I'm not sure how much the foggy film on the stock lens was effecting the output but I'm sure it wasn't helping.

From my testing, a 4300k-5000k brand name Xenon bulb is going to provide the most usable light output.

For H7, I put a pair of OSRAM Off Road bulbs in my wife's 525i high beams since one of the stock bulbs burned out. They are definitely brighter than the stock bulbs, not a huge difference, but still worth the upgrade. The price wasn't too bad either, I live in the US. For off road use only :evil:

Yes I have the same question - can the side lights (left bulb in pic) be replaced with whiter ones?

yes they can, ive changed mine to LEDs so they match the whiter output from my new HIDs (side by side with the HIDs it really showed how yellow and dull the side lights really are)

Thanks Jingle, have you got the bulb number/type or link to where to buy? I'm guessing I can buy a pair from Halfords?
 
great. Jingle can I have both bulb types and where from so I can get them. And white number plate lights too. Much appreciated
 
I had led's as my sidelights a few years back and they eventually burned out.

Ideally you want the ones where the actual led has a cover, rather than tbose ones where you can see the 'yellow bit on a stick'.
 
I've just managed to access the bulbs through the wheel arch cover etc. and have removed the side light bulb. Will take it to Halfords and swap it for a couple of LED's. When my Osram Nightbreakers arrive later today I will replace both headlights and side lights :)

They match well with my 4300 K HIDs though they are slightly more yellow but that sort of makes it look more OE.
I did code out the sidelight blub check however - I didn't see the point of running a 1W LED and having to use a 4W resistor to fool the car, plus I can leave the parking lights on overnight without worrying.
 
DON'T start adjusting the headlight aim without having it checked. There's NOTHING more annoying than being dazzled by some idiot with headlights aimed too high.

i experimented with lots of LED sidelights and all the cheap 1s i went for started flickering after a few weeks so as scooba steve says, try to get the 1s that have a covered front so they are sealed, cant remember which 1s i went for in the end as i got so many sets i cant remember where i got them from sorry

Thanks for the offer, but aren't they 6000k? I'm pretty obsessive about needing 5000k and nothing more, nothing less :lol: I just prefer the light output and colour of them.

How did you go about coding out the bulb check? Those are the exact bulbs I fitted last time (albeit cool white) and the Z4's canbus system didn't like them :lol:
 
The bulb check essentially looks for current draw, so all "CANBUS compatible" LEDs do is fool the system with a load resistor, wasting energy. I think this is another reason the cheap ones die so readily. It also checks for continuity when cold.
You need to get the trace from the LCZ module and make three lines inactive. I've not got them to hand but can post what I did.
 
If you look on eBay for "Cree" type LED's you will get the best type. Not cheap but gives crisp white light. You may need to run an inline resistor, I do, but that's no big deal.

I swapped the old Halogens for Osram Nightbreakers, I also bought LED side lights from Halfords. The side lights didn't work - god knows how , but after I fitted the new LEDs and switched them on the front indicator light came on! I'm returning the side LED's to Halfords and am ordering Osram LED side lights. Anyway here is what the new Nightbreakers look like in the daytime - they look fractionally whiter (I should have taken a before and after pic but forgot ). I'll find out later if theres much difference on the road at night)
