Bonus Day... ESS ordered.

Thought I'd treat myself this morning.

Ordered the ess kit.

Set aside the easter weekend to do it.

Anyone have any tips of getting it in, any steps to take before firing it up?

Also anything else that I should do at the same time? Got some 330i brakes, new consumables like plugs, coils etc.

Looking forward to having around 300bhp.

Very jealous. Interested to hear feedback on installation and first impressions. Hope the install goes smoothly

Very interested in following this! Nothing useful to aid you unfortunately but please document and take plenty of pics for us!

I’m also interested in seeing what power your motor makes after installation :driving:

How much is this going to cost on insurance. I had difficulty finding anyone who'd even quote for me (but that was as a daily driver Z4MC, with business use).

Extra £290PA on insurance. It's supposedly delivers around 280/300bhp on a 2.5i depending on the state of the engine and flywheel. So long as I get the traffic light GP to match a current golf R or S3 I'll be happy.

Not sure if it'll require fatter wheels at the back, I was tempted by some csl reps but I'd rather not splash out £600 just yet.

Should be easy enough to install. There is tons of space on that side of the engine bay, enough to smuggle a child across from Calais iirc.

Nice one.. I've got my relatives in the states on the hook to bring me a kit over in July/August when they come to visit :)

They reckon 40% increase at the preset 6psi boost. So your figures are about right as it takes the 3.0 to 330'ish bhp.

Mac fitted one to his SMG, so it's his fault I'm having one too :D Sure he'll be along to help if needed.

Congrats. You seem to have most bases covered. Only thing I can think that may potentially be an issue is the clutch. But you'll soon find that out when it's installed😁
I seem to remember reading you have to tweak a few parts for an e85 install as the kits designed for the e46. But iirc it's nothing major. Good luck with it!

Yep. Before I fit it, I'm having the pulley scanned and measured by a friend who is a fabricator. Idea being at some point I can get a smaller pulley and belt sourced for more power if possible.

Seems to be very good bang for buck. It's rare to find an all in one kit esp for such a good price. For instance my fiesta at stage 3 was £3500 all in buying it all seperate. And for like a mere 65bhp?

I'm just hoping that even after 13 years of harsh weather and abuse that the inlet and all bolts come off nice and easy. Will either be no swearing or 3 days solid of rage.

Apparently the M54 will go to 10psi, BUT the pulley bolt is sealed and removing invalidates the warranty...

What you paying for the kit if you don't mind me asking?

£3800 all in. I actually think that's pretty good value. From Mstyle got 5% off over the phone.

Got it about the pulley and warranty. It's more of a long term plan of I decide to go down that route. Will need to measure it up before I put it in otherwise it's a ballache.

good look with the install, depending on the belt configuration and the additional pulleys, you may have to remove the front end of the car, not totally but bumper off, headlights off, radiator out and loosen slam panel to get some bolts in. My kit is different and required that.

Also i'm sure you will get uprated larger injectors, new spark plugs and you need a laptop to code the car with new software. My kit said you need uprated engine mount.

Not a bad price, TBH I was expecting closer to £5k...

Mine is costing me £3100 depending on the exchange rate.

Comes with new injectors, and the lead to download your engine map, which I believe you send off to them to be altered.

Am sure Mac said he DID have to remove the front end pretty much in it's entirety.

Mike

You'll probably end up with more torque than a Z4M too.

It always surprised me that the S54 kits offer about 100bhp min, but only about 50lb/ft.

Although the MStyle price on that looks keen too

Significantly less than half the fitted price I was quoted for the ESS stage II kit for an ///M

The stage II kit is quite a step up though :P

Looks like the 'entry level' kit is about £6.5k+fitting (£900) - and about another £k for each stage/50hp after that.

I keep considering the basic kit, then talking myself up to the full-fat kit, and then realise that I can't fully utilise the 340bhp I've got now, so what's the point. Even at the 'Ring, I'm not driving at 10/10ths, so more power will just mean I'm approaching the corners faster and still being overtaking by the stripped out 700bhp Team Schirmer M3s!
