Its not just the flashing cameras but they have HADECS Radar up most the M1 now and especially the new section in Yorks
If you dont know already check out :
https://www.speedcamerasuk.com/hadecs-3.htm

Sounds like it wasnt a SMART section of motorway if it flashed.
You may and I say may get away with a course at 70 Mph +10% +2mph so 79MPH.
I was in Yorks on the M1 and was done in a 50 section for 56 and got a SMART Motorways awareness course but no fine.
Had to wait over 6 weeks to get a course.
They can catch 3/4/5 cars abreast all at the same time with no flash and no road markings.
Look for the 2 grey cameras on the LHS of the Gantrys.

Good luck - its a bummer!

Cheers Rucky.

The car picks up these HADECS very well, gives you a warning beep, plus they’re evenly spaced out and plentyful on the M1 as you’ll know hence I stick to 72 on the cruise control,

I’m thinking now the flashes were actually the North bound outside lane cameras, as I saw them as I was right at the gantry from the side and not behind me. Fingers crossed. :)

Well we live and learn...I didn’t think smart motorway cameras fired when there was no speed limit displayed but that’s not true..here’s a picture of a car being ‘caught’ on a non displayed limit motorway..in fact it hadn’t shown a speed limit for over 12 hours..

:? Surely motorway speed limit is 70 unless stated otherwise regardless of wether the speed limit has been displayed no...? If not that would mean the speed limit would have to be displayed at every single slip road, unless I’m missing something...?

The point I was trying to explain is that there are times on smart motorways when all the gantry lights are off...so yes the National limits apply..

However often when the gantries are active they re-display the 70 mph limit post a period of slower traffic control .. sometimes they show a National limit sign...the point being is that the system is obviously ‘active’ as opposed to all dark n silent..but as discussed just cause they are dark doesn’t mean they aren’t watching..

Well that’s pretty obvious hence my reply tbh but thanks anyway.

That’s a hell of a post Andy....

What I failed to say was the flash was not behind me, I was tired and didn’t think of it last night, it was pretty much right on the car if that makes sense, so I’m thinking it was the North bound outside lane camera that flashed perhaps..?

  Aye, as I said nosiness got the better of me about what I’d said about the two flashes white lines

Now you’ve decided to give us all the bloody information :poke:  it does look like it could be on the other side of the motorway as the flash going off as you describe doesn’t tie up with gathering information on your car.

What this thread has made me aware of, and to pay attention to, is what Peter has pointed out that the smart motorway cameras are live all of the time. I stupidly thought they were only operational when there was a change/restriction being displayed. Thank Christ I live in rural Scotland and my nearest motorway is 75 miles away

...and relax. Everyone can return to being bored again. I liked your mention of a run to 'Barnard Castle' which I presume is what one might say if questioned for breaking Covid rules. :D

It comes under the educational rules BeeEmm...I’m not being naughty. :D

 Didn’t cross my mind until very late Andy, I was knackered.....seems bloody obvious really doesn’t it....

You have a dashcam & can privately review the footage?

... otherwise 13 more sleeps & then can rest one way or tuther

I've seen the HADECS camera flash on the M1 many times around Notts/Derby. Always two flashes as well.

Amazed they flashed at an indicated 78mph. That’s well within the usual tolerance.

78 on the cruise control, so...what...75 corrected real speed Mr PT...? It’s over 70 so that’s it, busted no...?

Seems to vary from one constabulary to another, but I thought it was usually +10% plus bit more (1 or 2 mph). I wonder if they’re set to flash over 70 as a deterrent anyway? Either way, hopefully nothing will come of it as getting nicked for a 75mph overtake would be rotten luck.

Honestly....5hrs of driving and I get nicked during the only 10-20 seconds of speeding in that whole 5hrs.... You couldn’t make it up really.....

Maybe the driver behind you did flash after all, to get you to move out of the way. :o It's as good as any other suggestion on here. :)

Nope, definitely no lights flashing, if they do that I slow down or brake check them.....he wasn’t being a dick. It was a gantry very bright two flash camera occasion.

Should have slipped up the inside of them instead mate, also wrong I know but middle lane hoggers boils my piss so I just keep to my speed and cruise up the inside past them if possible, always watching though in case they do suddenly switch lanes (which is highly unlikely) because they will make their full 200 mile trip stuck in the same lane :-x

You Brake check people!?
Not a nice thing to do.
I have had it done to myself after flashing someone who pulled out in front of me from a side road in a 60mph zone without looking. He got up to about 30 and then stuck the brakes on hard.
Dick move to pull.
Dont do it.

If they come screaming up my backside flashing lights and hanging 5 inches off my bumper then yes they get it.

Not nice having some utter wankshaft so close you can’t see his headlights either. :x
