Bargain of the century.....maybe!!!! Update: definitely maybe! :)

I got some industrial heat shrink and used this to add some rigidity to the rubber. This worked better. However I'm undecided with the finish. Not that anyone will ever see it unless you specifically pointed it out... But I'm a perfectionist. I know it's there and I can do better. So I've ordered some heat shrink end caps. So these will go on and leave a completely flush look to the rubber capping. Will report back once these arrive.

That's me for now!

Wow, up with the larks to post this one kis? That's dedication and attention to detail!
Looks good.
I'm sure I have some rigid bushings somewhere that I'm hoping to drill out and fit....

Cheers Chris! Well I'd taken the pics earlier and had been meaning to do the write up, so took the plunge! lol
I thought about this, but unless you drill something out as an exact fit I'd be worried it would work its way loose? Unless you glue it in place...

I better check my gap

I thought the same when Sangbleu first mentioned them. Didn't know they existed! There is a very small gap, and I don't think it would be a problem, but like I said I'd like to air on the side of caution!!

Not home made I'm a bit lazy but I found these in a Super U in France. Paid less than 1 euro for the box. They fit perfectly and leave a nice gap.

Well I have six left :D
They sit really tight and do not move at all. I'm really happy. You can find them in any Super U I guess but if you're not close to France I can send a pair.

What's the idea of this? Can't say I've ever had a problem with my Tailgate and rear window.

I agree actually - if its not touching then . . . . well its not touching, so whats the problem?

When it does touch... For whatever reason... Beyond the 5mm grace zone, and u hear 'craaaack' as ur rear window disintegrates... Then it's a problem ;)

Why would it touch if it's not touching? Makes no sense whatsoever

It's obviously been designed in that way, and I highly doubt the tailgate would magically shoot over and hit the glass.

Unexpected gust of wind.
Something falling against an open bootlid.
Inconsistent build/finish of any given Z4.
Parked on an incline while opening putting more weight on the bootlid.
Roof deformation, (its plastic after all) pushing it rearwards
Over-enthusiastic opening by someone else not familiar with the clearance, or lack of. (My good ladyfriend Laura used to open and slam shut the boot of my E36 Coupe with wild abandon even after 'politely reminding' her not to numerous times. Result: cracked windscreen. Happened right before my eyes after she wanted to get her lipgloss from the boot. She got back in and I advised her how expensive that minor cosmetic upgrade of hers was going to cost me!

All realistic scenarios that could introduce risk of interference between lid and screen I suppose.
The point is, the clearance is minimal and BMW actually issued this as a part it looks like to mitigate any risk of contact between bootlid and rear screen. I think someone also cited an example of a busted screen somewhere too (?)

I know I'm wary and a bit more careful when opening the lid now after learning about the issue. Even though it hasn't happened to me or anyone here I think any risk-mitigation measure is better than none, especially when it can be effected so cheaply.

Horses for courses tho init?

Ben it's not a tailgate, only the hatchbacks (E86) have that option, along with a roof :poke:
Us roadster owners have boots or trunks if your on the other side of the pond

Hmm, maybe this was addressed then for facelift e85's, cos mine is definitely closer than that! We're talkin 4mm or so and the boot leading edge sits horizontally adjacent to the window bottom edge. Ur boot leading edge looks higher than window bottom edge or is it just the camera angle?
