When it does touch... For whatever reason... Beyond the 5mm grace zone, and u hear 'craaaack' as ur rear window disintegrates... Then it's a problem
Why would it touch if it's not touching? Makes no sense whatsoever
It's obviously been designed in that way, and I highly doubt the tailgate would magically shoot over and hit the glass.
Unexpected gust of wind.
Something falling against an open bootlid.
Inconsistent build/finish of any given Z4.
Parked on an incline while opening putting more weight on the bootlid.
Roof deformation, (its plastic after all) pushing it rearwards
Over-enthusiastic opening by someone else not familiar with the clearance, or lack of. (My good ladyfriend Laura used to open and slam shut the boot of my E36 Coupe with wild abandon even after 'politely reminding' her not to numerous times. Result: cracked windscreen. Happened right before my eyes after she wanted to get her lipgloss from the boot. She got back in and I advised her how expensive that minor cosmetic upgrade of hers was going to cost me!
All realistic scenarios that could introduce risk of interference between lid and screen I suppose.
The point is, the clearance is minimal and BMW actually issued this as a part it looks like to mitigate any risk of contact between bootlid and rear screen. I think someone also cited an example of a busted screen somewhere too (?)
I know I'm wary and a bit more careful when opening the lid now after learning about the issue. Even though it hasn't happened to me or anyone here I think any risk-mitigation measure is better than none, especially when it can be effected so cheaply.
Horses for courses tho init?
