You certainly have a point. The danger as far as I'm aware with running harnesses without a cage is in the event of a roll. A 3 point allows a kind of inverted submarining which a harness will not, thereby in theory saving snapping your spine if the roof compresses too far. I have rolled a car previously with harnesses and no cage, thankfully it was fairly slow and I was fine. Something I try and avoid these days!
