Back in Z4MC ownership- and building a track beast :)

Personally I wouldn't have harnesses in any car that didn't have a cage.
You certainly have a point. The danger as far as I'm aware with running harnesses without a cage is in the event of a roll. A 3 point allows a kind of inverted submarining which a harness will not, thereby in theory saving snapping your spine if the roof compresses too far. I have rolled a car previously with harnesses and no cage, thankfully it was fairly slow and I was fine. Something I try and avoid these days! For braking and overall control of the car I still prefer to run that risk. (obviously only ever on track).

The plan is to have a cage next year, but I just want to make sure that the car doesn't disappoint me before going all-out.

it's difficult to take a cage out and return to a road car etc

I would agree that the "best" solution is a full cage with harnesses, however, you really shouldn't drive a caged car without wearing a helmet, this gets a bit tiresome on the road, popping to the shops that sort of thing.

So, unless it is a track only, trailered to and from the circuit car(i.e. most track cars) then you have to compromise somewhere. My view is that seats and harnesses in a pretty strong closed coupe is a reasonable compromise for road and non-competitive track use.

Hi TomK, will I be able to put the large speakers back in once the harnesses are fitted?

I also would look at 18" rims (like the APex ARC-8s I have with are lighter than CSLs) as you have access to cheaper and a wider range of rubber. I've also found the car to handle and ride better personally (I used to have CSLs).

Hi TomK,

What width and offsets do you run front and rear? Also do you know of a UK supplier?

Many thanks
Dan

can't offer any advise or help, i can comment on the seats though - nice  also i like the spoiler

Correct, even with my rather portly Brembo calipers. No issues strut side or on full lock.

I run 8.5 x 18 and 10 x 18 on my car - Apex EC-7 in my case. Can check the offsets if you like.

These easily clear my AP racing calipers.

Just one thought on sizes, although I also use 18" wheels, there is one reason why you might want to stick with 19s - if you want to use Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres - there are practically no 18" sizes available.

One further thought - have you actually bought the car yet? As if not you could do worse than buy mine with all the mods already done ... I haven't actually put it up for sale yet, but plan to. Pretty sure it'll be a much cheaper solution.

A bit of an update,

Parts bought so far,

- KW Clubsport 2 Way (can get these for £2200 or maybe a little less if anybody is interested)?
- Vibra technics engine and gearbox mounts
- Royal Wheels, Black Alcantara with M stitching ordered
- Apex ARC-8's and brand new R888's

Just waiting for the date from the garage that's going to fit it all! :)

I would recommend going for a square setup on the wheels and tires. It really improves the understeer. I use 18x9 265/35/18 on my CSL. Very happy with it.

ARC-8s do look really tidy on the Z4 so i commend your wheel choice. Might want to consider a set of wet weather tyres though as the 888's really don't deal with standing water all too well. Great in the dry though!

I think the KW Clubsports will resolve any tendency to understeer and a far better solution.

KW Clubsports + H&R ARBs + VT Competition engine mounts = no more understeer, oversteer on demand that's easily controlled with the throttle pedal and markedly shorter braking distances (thanks to abolishing the pitching under braking)
