Back box modification - With pics.

I have the rear box off my 3.0si sitting in my boot already! I had it cut off for a back box delete of sorts, and have kept it. Where abouts are you based?

St Helens, Merseyside..

Ah not close unfortunately.

Well if you do give your exchange idea a bit more thought and are keen to go ahead, please let me know!

OMG!

That sounds epic!!! Make me one!!! :headbang:

I'm thinking of offering this on an exchange basis..

ie, I send out a modded box complete with fitting clamps and you cut your old one off and send it back to me for me to mod for the next person...

I could also offer a fitting service where I replace yours with a pre modded box and keep yours to mod..

Need to gauge interest and work out a price. Bearing in mind that performance boxes for the Zed are silly money...

Mike

The modded box sounds awesome ! :D Definitely put me down for an exchange one if you decide to do this.

Ok, so done around 150 miles today, blatting here, there and everywhere - With a massive grin on my face, I LOVE the sound this makes, especially in tunnels or along roads with walls either side :D

I reckon it would take me around 6 hours to do this again from scratch, plus cost of stainless tube, stainless flexi and stainless wire/gas etc. I am going to put up a post to gauge interest in having this done as a mod...

So, the used box has arrived :)

Looks like my thoughts re 1" bypass pipes were right, not enough room to fit them without making the back ends of the tips visible...

I thought this may have been an aftermarket box, but it's original BMW, having been "modded" to slide on and off with welded sleeves, apparently the seller had received it with the car and left the "performance" box on it when he got rid. One less job for me to do then!

Have now got exhaust wrap tape, aluminium tape, stainless ties, 50mm sleeves and 2 * 300mm lengths of 50mm stainless tube. The weekend should be fun, and hopefully noisy! Cost so far, around £50 all in, the stainless welding gas and wire were freebies, the box was £30 of that total.

Will take some pics as I do it, and a before/after video/sound clip..

Mike

I can't believe this. This was my back box. My zed has sadly gone but I'm looking at soon purchasing a 3.0si and may be interested in this mod

Great thread, did doing the mod for others ever happen, is it still available?

Yes he still does them.
Google zed shed - Newton le willows.

If you go for one of these fantastically overpriced mods, take care, do not pay upfront on the exchange basis or you may never see your back box.

I might have a go myself, if I can find a backbox on ebay for a sensible price, so I can play round with it off the car. If I do, I'll post an update.
Regarding the price, it's the cost of aftermarket systems, that's made me look at doing this.

Well, I've got a second hand backbox off a 3.0 Z4 for a reasonable price, and it's in good nick but it doesn't have any chrome tail pipes, just 2 stainless tubes coming out of the back of the backbox. I thought I'd be able to get the backbox modified and swap my tailpipes over.

However, I now now have 2 problems:
1) I can't remove the current tailpipes off my car - My tail pipes do not have the retaining screw I was expecting, they just seem to be part of the backbox, and they won't budge
2) my tailpipes are round and the ones on the other backbox are oval

I've just had a look for tailpipes using a part number (82120151088) off another thread on here, and they're about 45 quid each from euro car parts, so by the time I've had the bbox modified (if I decide not to have a maul at it myself) the cost will be getting close to the price of an aftermarket system

:headbang:

The SI tail pipes are just a push fit. Pull really hard and they will come off. They are held on by spring clips in side the tail pipe.

OK thanks, I'll go and have a maul now :-)

Thanks for that info rich61, I've managed to remove the tail pipes by pulling hard and then using a wooden drift and a rubber mallet.

I still have the problem of the tail pipes being designed to go on round pipe, whereas the 'new' BB has oval pipes. I'll see if I can get some cheap tips or just clean up the steel tubes.

Why not do the mod first, fit and see if you like it before blowing more money on tips?
Or use that as a practice, then if you like it, do your original one and refit that, then sell on the oval pipe version.
Take plenty of photos as you do it and I'm sure you'd have a buyer.
