Auto wipers problem or normal ?

Hi

If I turn the ignition off while the wipers are moving in auto mode, the wipers stop in the sweep motion.

When I turn the ignition on again, the wipers don't move ie continue the sweep or return to the parked position.
I have to move the wiper stalk and the wipers move again.

If the wiper stalk is on a continuous mode (manually on) the wipers start moving fine when the ignition is turned off and on again.

Is this normal ?

I don't think it's the common problem regarding grease in the wiper motor arcing as it only happens in auto mode.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Rob

Mine do the same but i find it quite rare to catch the wipers in motion.
The auto wipers don't resume from a restart. I believe this is to protect the blades in case they are frozen to the screen in winter.

I believe Richard! adequately answered the question, so excuse me while I deviate from the topic a bit. I don't buy the save the blades story because when the wipers are full on they resume moving on restart. I think the failure for auto wipe to restart is just a side effect of how the computer controlled system works. Just like many electronics in the home, if you unplug the device from mains power while it is on, unless there is a battery backup, when you restore mains power you still need to physically turn it on again. It's rare for such devices to turn on on their own.

Thoughts and opinions?

I'm surprised the automatic system couldn't have been programmed to reset itself every time the ignition is switched on.
I had a 08 3 series that restarted no problem.

But at least I now know its not a fault.
