Atacama Yellow 35is build thread

I think its fairly well know that E89s tend to wear their rear pads out quicker than the fromts.

However was suprised to see the rear brake pad light come on with a predicted remaining 1,200 miles as we were doing the alignment check..

The discs and pads were on my 20i for a while along with the 6 pot brake kit which leads it by a couple of thousand miles of wear.

So rear pads about 7,000-10,000 miles..front pads 60,000 miles..

Just shows how hard the DSC unit is working especially on a 400 bhp variant..

I’ve noticed on mine that the rears wear about twice as quickly as the fronts,
just one point, when you changed the brakes over from the 2.0 did you reset the brake pad monitor or does it still think it’s got the old pads in?

Frankly I'm not sure..as you know we ended up swapping bits between 3 cars and not sure if I or didn't..anyway fresh pads going in tomorrow..

The front pads arrived today (although they look like they won't be needed for a short while!

You can see why they may wear more slowly if contact patch has anything to do with it..

Turns out ( I forgot with so many things going on)..that some Pagid pads were put in when the brakes were transferred to the 35is…

So that’s around 6k miles for a set of rear pads…

Wowser, those brakes must be active almost permanently! Think mine made it to 27k ish?

I think the DSC unit is now working very hard trying to keep the wheels in line ..that’s the second set worn out, each about 6-7k miles … :driving: :tumbleweed:

Without having to read all 26 pages again, was it the 2.0 that had the limited slip diff and the 35is is relying on the ecu to try and keep the tyres in check?
I know the 35 needs a different diff from the other e89’s but couldn’t remember if you had fitted one to this or not.

Both cars are running Quaife LSDs and I checked this afternoon that the e-diff option in the DSC is toggled off.

So it’s the DSC working as the tyres squirm when you boot it..

I think paradoxically that because I’m not a heavy brake-er with the weight and speed if gently slowing down the rears are working harder

1st world problems of hooning in the wide open spaces of Scotland..

Let’s see how the new. Brembo HP pads work out..

Following on from the issues reference alignment and speaking to the Ohlins support in the UK ( which was very helpful) I decided to bite the bullet (again) and invest in some camber plates..the suggestion was to move from approx 0.5 degree front camber to somewhere 'at least two'..

So initially I'm going to set it up with 1.5 degrees of negative camber and 2.0 degrees rear negative camber.

Had to go to Lithuania to get some decent camber plates.

To do the rear camber you need adjustable rear camber arms so got some of these upmarket babies.

Not sure how good the front steeing arms so whilst I'm down there went with some Meyle HD parts..alledgedly superior to BMW OE spec.

I did find that the Ohlins had settled and the heights on the car are all over the place..so again..we will get them all up to the reference level on the car, not sat on the bench.

(Ohlins does one set of coilovers for all E89s, clearly big weight differences both front and rear between a 18i manual and a 35is)

Like a squirrel continuing to buy likely items , ideally of better quality when the discounts strike..

So latest goodies are a new Pierburg all metal uprated water pump and a nice Mahle thermostat for the rainy day when it comes..which of course means it won't..

After changing the electronic pump on my 3.0si i thought it would be just as easy on the 35is, boy was i wrong

I’ll leave that to my tech guy…seems to spend his life replacing inaccessible parts in cars where they appear to have built the engine bay after the engine was fitted..

I think it’s a good combo..I source the quality bits..if in doubt he fits them, then I do any fettling or tweaking…

When I put my garage up this summer my excuses will wain…

There’s a label on the outside that says instructions are on the inside…what possibly could go wrong.. :tumbleweed:

Nice IKEA flat pack

I bought something similar and it went together very easily

As if they had made one before

Carry on with the good work you must have spent a small fortune by now?

I think she’s finally starting to twig..I’m the purveyor of my own demise..

I left boxes of opened goodies everywhere…spent the last few days re-boxing and storing neatly on my shelves in the shed…

It looks like a spare parts complex.

I see that xHP (the gearbox tuning app) and MHD (the engine cu tuning app) have had various revisions..so decided to reflash both.

I had set the MHD throttle to linear rather than the default where it gives a lot of throttle for not much pedal (try 650nm in the wet) and also speed of throttle reponse to "M1"..

I found the M1 setting a bit too touchy especially in sports mode and when doing less than about 70 mph..so I adjusted it to a mid point about halfway between 'M1' and 'normal'

At the same time I changed the default gearbox for MHD to 'manual' which is what xHP generically recommend for tuned engines.

Turns out that MHD andxHP have worked together and you can use either the 'DCT' or 'manual' options.

Chatting on another thread it was asked about BHP and how strong the gearbox was..I've copied this across for completeness..

So the DCT is Getrag's GS7D36SG..there were 4 versions..the E89 had the first version.

BHP is not the issue with gearboxes its torque.

35i has 450 nm as stock and 35is has 500nm through overboost.

The clutches are controlled by pressure at up to 17 BAR which is alledged to related to 600 nm torque.

Other boxes have an 18 BAR limit which relates to 700nm torque.

My 35is on a MHD stage 1 tune V9 made 562nm, on a stage 2+ V9 made 591nm and on stage 2+ V10 made 648nm

So for this and other good reasons xHP is your friend..with a 19 BAR limt it can do 800nm+ and now, released 20 BAR for 1000nm..(stage 3)

That is if you tune it..

What's very important at this end of town is that the tune and the gearbox talk in full to each other..so piggy back tuners and back street maps are a really bad idea as the geasrbox may not realise how much torque is being produced and as a result does not applye nough clamping pressure..once DCT clutches slip they burn out very fast.

Auto boxes like the ZF 8HP have torque limiters which saves the box from its own demise..the DCT hasn't got them.

xHP allows you to place torque limits but without a dyno you don't know whether you are skirting close to the edge..

My new turbos are predicted to make around 735 nm so a 19 BAR limit should work nicely.

I spent the day tweaking xHP and MHD and I've got it to a very nice place in terms of smoothness, response and performance.

So the powertrain feels pretty good at this stage.

More fettling required on the chassis, hopefully sorted out over the next 2 or 3 weeks between runs..

So a trip to the “Ring “ will be on the card next year?

Ron several reasons why not..

Acute embarrassment when either some even older duffer goes pissing past me in his Audi touring car or a zitty young pup blows me away with a tweaked Seat …

Binning it then trying to explain to the breakdown and recovery guys that you were just pottering to the supermarket… :driving:

Realised a long time ago that it’s not what you’ve got it’s how good / bad / mad you are….I’m not that good / bad / mad .. :tumbleweed:
