Atacama Yellow 35is build thread

For me, the boot rack idea falls flat when the sudden need to raise the roof crops up!

Roadster Bags and some careful packing have been ok for us on a 14/21 day European trip.

My tuxes and Mo’s ballgowns take most of the boot space

Actually you can motor the roof with rack and bag attached ….structurally it’s irrelevant to the boot given it’s mass and construction…it’s just not good practice as is motoring the roof without the engine running..so in both cases if you must you can…

The suction cups are tested to 3 times the rated load for a 10 minute period (tried to be pulled off)

So it’s emotional rather than logic which seems to grip most people…after all they lift huge panes of double glazing just with suction cups..imagine if that didn’t work…

Well, yes, but at the same time...

Initial test was OK but what appears a slow leak from one of the suction caps

Double glazing panes tend to get lifted for a few minutes, thereby minimising the risk from any slow leaks. Pants and socks in a bag need to stay in place for the duration of your journey.

Pretty sure the internet must have a word for fear of suction cups detaching.

The suction cups aren’t the issue for me - I just wouldn’t want to cycle the roof with the extra load.
I wonder what it sounds like with thf roof down with that mass in the wind stream?

The rear boot assembly is massive..remember it’s design to take a rear end shunt…25kg in all that, not even that due to the lever arms is negligible in terms of strain.

At over 100 mph on my private test track this weekend you couldn’t hear anything above tyre roar…

Friend has the same rack on his Porkster..over 155 mph in Germany with admittedly a smaller bag…he points out that you should check the indicators every time you stop and if necessary a precautionary pump.

Are the Ohlins better than the B8s now you’ve had the chance to get the bedded in?

Wouldn't it be easier (Although not cheaper) to ditch the wife and the need for a boot rack?

Yes it would be a lot easier but as you say not cheaper..plus getting my testicles back may be problematic….

Remember the old days of 2-3 week tours on the bike with less luggage…heh ho..

I’ll stick with it..

The nervousness for me is the sustained ~50mph roads, when the bag is buffeted by the wind and creates a vibration that works the boot lid’s tolerances. These will be larger than it is designed for. I suppose it depends on how much you use it. Once or twice a year isn’t going to make a difference, but a lot will cause work to the assembly.

Never had a bike thankfully but appreciate you have to look after your valuables

Following on from AnnubisZed work on CarPlay boxes I pressed the trigger on the second generation version of the MOST based box, the first generation MOST box had an issue with poor bass performance that for some was irrelevant and for some a major issue.

The problem rested in the hardware so could not be resolved by a firmware fix.

This second generation box addresses that issue. Reviews elsewhere suggest the bass problem is now fixed and provides audio close to what can be provided by the USB CIC connections.

Box arrived very speedily (around 5 days)…

Quality of everything looks good..there’s an improved quality video cable connecting the box to the CIC unit.

I’ll wait till the winter and plug it in when I do the major audio upgrade.

Figured inflation and availability may affect matters later in the year so banked it whilst I could.

After testing the rack bouncing around the Kyles of Bute I noticed one of the suction cups was losing pressure faster than the other two.

It never lost grip but I found it unsettling.

Chatting with the supplier we did various tricks like resting the rubber feet in boiling water for 30 seconds but to no avail.

In the end they sent a new cup which I've now fitted.

Also I adjusted the centre foot from its most rearward position on the rack to the forward postion.

This gives a more even fit and means the centre one is not trying to force the rack up on the other two feet.

I've ordered a pair of flatter bags to fit the rack too.

One thing I'm not happy about is, due to the curvature of the boot, the screws are held at angles and rely on overly large holes in the tubing to accomodate the curvature.

Not sure how to solve it..but I'm working on it.

Following (well in anticipation) of Nanu’s profound advice the 19” Arc-8s have now arrived in satin black as have the Conti Sports 7 tyres.

I did ponder the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 but they come in surprisingly limited size options so despite their very good reviews were not an option.

Wheels are going to be finished in gloss black..

I’ll fit them post my upcoming next mystery tour starting tomorrow..they came to late to be fitted for this odyssey

So now we have gloss black Apex Arc-8s with Conti Sports 7 ..the rear dish isn’t as over the top as I’d hoped for but overall they look (to my eyes) much better than the 427Ms.

Conti Sports 7s have a really chunky rim protector.

Need to use a 5mm spacer to bring them closer to OE offset specs.

Will be interested to see how the steering feels ..supposed to be much better feel than the MP4S..

Gone from 235/35 19 to 245/35 18 so will have that as a complication in grams of comparing steering feel.

So wheels fitted this afternoon..feeling pleased..mind you having spent over £2,500 I should be pleased ….

Noticed the tech guy had set the front dampers on 25 clicks out…recommended is 10 clicks…so put front and rear dampers to 9 clicks..let see how it goes..tyres set at 34/36 PSI..not Bar..

Camera struggles with the light ..poor definition..against the yellow..

Should send the pics to BMW head office and it may persuade them to put Atacama yellow back on the options list.

Imagine a G29 in that colour

WTF, what’s the matter with you, I just can’t believe what you’re doing :poke:

Putting a boot rack on the zed is one thing, but socks with sandals is just criminal, shame on you

Wheels look gorgeous though

My wife has the same reaction as you about my socks n sandals…I just don’t get it..sartorial elegance and comfort..what’s the issue? :tumbleweed:

Sadly my wife’s not on the same page as you on the wheels…’so they are black..the others were black..’ :headbang:
