Anywhere in the UK you can take your Zed to see what it will do?

There seems to be more and more speed restrictions in Germany as years go by, so it’s not the free for all that a lot of folk think if is.

Well even in my day the two lane autobahns were already fairly clogged so realistically extreme high speeds were not realistic..

France has some fabulous empty high quality roads but they are littered with those auto speed boxes that look like safes as well as the police..they used to take a relaxed view in the past but that’s now long gone..

Bruntingthorpe is no more - the site has changed hands and the entire runway and most of the hard standing is now used for car storage. The classic jets collection has mostly been moved out bar the aircraft owned by David Walton, no more taxi runs and no more GA flying sadly as its noted by the CAA as permanently closed.
The proving ground web site is still live though.

"BRUNTINGTHORPE
Change active civil AD symbol at 522913.00N 0010750.00W to disused/abandoned AD symbol, due to site's closure. Remove all associated text, leaving just the AD name."

thanks for the intell!

small airfield hire might work actually... theres a local airfield near banbury where Prodrive go to shake down racecars, and i once passengered in a Jag F type that did a few high speed runs up and down the runway - that was a pleasant wednesday afternoon...

it was basically contact the airfield, they gave us a radio to communicate with the tower, and then we waited at the end of the runway to be given permission for an out and back run between plane landings.

might be a quiet airfield around with a reasonable length runway - could definitely do some 0-60, 0-100 and 1/4 mile times with a VBOX or similar. As with these kinda things, a professional attitude goes a long way.

Peter, you’ll need to see if you can arrange to get access to the ex stealth bomber runway in Campbeltown when doing the Kintyre run

Seemingly the longest runway in Britain, was a contender for Branson’s space tourist program because of its length. I managed 130 something in an RS Turbo down it during the period was being built. The car ran out of puff long before I ran out of road. My mate was one of the contractors so had access through that.

Hi Andy..I had pondered that but it’s an active civil airport but given COVID-19 etc I can’t see it being very busy...I suspect public liability etc may interfere...given that I have a data logger soon I won’t need any supporting kit..

I’ll do some digging

The only other thing I can think of Peter is if next years Mach1 event goes ahead because it’s a racing event and they might have all the liabilities covered under the event umbrella and afaik they have access to the whole airport on that weekend.

Just look at that road stretching out behind those bikes :driving:

Just checked ..it’s 2 km long now..and is not open fir air traffic on Saturdays and limited opening on Sunday afternoons...

I’ll see what the possibilities are  :driving:

I wasn’t aware they had shortened it. The last time I was there was a few years ago at a wedding.

The community trust rent/hire out as much as possible to try and cover costs.

Worth a try

Bruntingthorp or an autobahn. It used to be pretty easy to get a place on a Vmax even. I have been to a couple, when they first started. Personal record 187mph in a borrowed RuF. That was 15 years or so back. Not got the balls to try a run on a public road in the UK any more. I'm past that point in my motoring life happily.

Hope you find a safe opportunity to scratch that itch.

Beachy head....?? Might make terminal velocity..... :?

(I’m kidding...)

Don’t think my adaptives would cope with the landing  .................but your KW’s.........maybe

You probably won't get to Vmax, but my advice would be to get yourself across to the Isle of Mann for a weekend. No speed limits at all outside of the towns. We were hitting 130 - 140mph on the mountain section in our Z3M group trip back in 2005. So liberating, and way more fun than just testing Vmax.

Hello ph001, yes all noted, been a visitor many times at TT time and Manx GP times...

Crazy speeds (for the roads) both in my Rover 220 Turbo Coupe (the same year as the official roads open car was the same car in the same Polynesian Turquoise) and on multiple bikes Yamaha EXUP / Honda CBR1000 / Ducati 900SS etc etc

As I said my desire was a largely once in a lifetime event to max the car out with its mods, just to see what it would do...so its a long runway job..not a track day etc..I'm fortunate living here in the Borders that we have lots and lots of wide open roads to go as fast as I need to under 'normal' circumstances .. :driving:

John-e89, I did the calculation..about 125mph from Beachy Head..so not a terminal velocity..nice suggestion

Predictably would have been my middle name if my parents could have afforded one.. :tumbleweed:

Is that with the driver on board. That extra weight is going to help with this one. :D

Perfect  Possibly the only time the driver could actually be sure they were adding to the equation when it comes to going faster in a Zed.

very interesting, and not far from me..
i will need to look into it

Its Turweston airfield... maybe on a quiet weekday when the weather's not so good for flying they can lend you their runway for an hour or two...

Mass is irrelevant when considering acceleration due to gravity:

v^2 = u^2 + 2as

Where v = final velocity, u = initial velocity, a = acceleration, s = distance

Beachy Head is 162m in height. Assuming that u^2 is zero (since you aren’t falling until you leave the cliff at which point you start to accelerate downwards) and ignoring drag, your velocity when you hit the beach is:

v = sq root (0 + (2 x 9.8 x 162)) = 56.3m/s = 202.9kph = 126mph

I suspect a car falling wheels down wouldn’t come close to 126mph due to drag, whilst a car falling nose first would probably exceed that if the cliffs were higher. Of course, given that most cars experience lift at high speed, if your horizontal velocity is great enough when you leave the cliff and the car remains stably perpendicular to the ground, it might even glide, landing gently and gracefully in the sea :D
