For anyone who wants the heated steering wheel mod before the winter comes in I've just come across these parts...

The steering wheel (non flappy paddle!) and including an airbag..

And the squib/slipring (with cruise control stalks, can be altered to non-cruise)...

You'll need a switch and cowl...

And a couple of sundries.
So about £440 all in, not too bad considering you can sell your old wheel and you have a spare airbag!

And to fit it, the installation instructions ...

Just a thought, if anyone fancies this and also wants cruise control retrofitting as well, then give me a shout and I'll do you a deal! Obviously as long as those parts are available

+1 for the heated steering wheel BTW - one of my non-negotiable must haves when searching for the z4.

It makes a small difference, but on a freezing 5am morning, it's a good one.

Surprisingly, given how cheap it was at purchase time, very few z4s have one!

Yeah I love mine, like you say, 5am on a cold morning, or even a chilly evening drive with the roof down :driving:

Yeah, twas I who snatched these up. Big thanks @AnubisZed for flagging these. I've been keeping an eye out for a Non-Flappy sports leather heated steering wheel for years and always miss. Looking forward to getting it installed.

Excellent

For the power supply I didn't bother running it to the fusebox, instead I jumpered from the ashtray connector. For this you need to make the end of the 12v + and - wires into a Y jumper. I bought a used BMW ashtray from any other BMW that was cheap, but still had the same 3 pin Molex connector on it and came with the car loom side connector as well (so you have a male and female plug), something like this one...

A bit of cutting, soldering, heat shrink and wrapping and you've got yourself a nice Y cable. Oh, I also added an inline fuse holder with a 5 amp fuse

EDIT** As it's a bit of a wet n windy day today I'm currently on the laptop, and I'm working on a few videos for the channel. One of which just happens to be the heated steering wheel mod video, so hopefully it could very well be uploaded later today (about time really!! :D ). I'm just doing a draft version first then I need to add a voiceover to it, finalise it and it'll be done

I must admit heated steering wheels never did it for me, but I have one on the G29 and its magic... must be old age creeping in :oldman:

I think it's one of those things that if you have never had it you don't miss it.
We have heated wheels in both our cars and never feel the need for gloves in the winter.

Why it would anyone would get heated seats without heated steering wheel?? In many other brands of vehicles in those model years, it's just called a "cold weather package" including both. But in my 2011 BMW, it does have heated seats without heated steering. :scratchhead:

Then there's the odd relationship of Germans not designing effective cupholders - but that's a different topic.

BMW did offer a "Cold Weather Package", which included Heated Steering Wheel, Through Loading System with Ski Bag, 3 Stage Heated seats, Headlight Washers and the Exteded Storage Pack...... BUT, all of those were available as separate items, so the chances are that most just picked what they wanted, and must have not thought that a Heated steering Wheel, which was an £155 option, wasn't worth the cost! After all, some owners didn't think that the heated seats were worth it!!

I just can't understand buying a Premium/Luxury car, and not opting for any premium/luxury options on it. Seems cheap to me and you may as well just buy a Renault Megane Cabriolet instead at that point.

Anyway, can't wait to find out I've bitten off far more than I can chew when I get to doing the retrofit and not being able to get it working

Would you believe that there was even an option to have fabric seats on the E89!! Well I say an option, the option was to actually have the leather, whereas if you didn't opt for it then you got fabric. And if anyone wants that option, there are a pair of fabric E89 seats on eBay at the moment
There are a lot of options, that from the factory would seem not too much of a price, but once you start adding them all up it starts getting quite expensive, but it's all down to the original owner and what they specified.
Mine was very basic when I bought it, but now after a bit of tinkering :D it's pretty much up there as a fully (almost) spec'd car :driving:

Nah, you'll be fine  The How-To video should be uploaded tonight as it's all complete, just need to do the thumbnail

Alas ended up being a little preoccupied with other stuff, but, as they say, "all good things come to they who wait"....

It depends on the car though.
I have had heated wheels in several different manufacturers' cars and some are better than others.
Worst was a Mazda6 I had a few years ago. It just heated 2 inches of the wheel either side. Great if you drive like a learner, but my bad habits made it no use whatsoever.
Volvo ones are a bit better, but not great.
I had it on a F33 aswell, but never used it as it was a convertible which didn't go out when cold.

Love my heated steering wheel :driving: , you only need to switch it on for 5 minutes and it makes all the difference with the cold mornings :D ...goes well with heated seats :fuelfire: ...roof down on a cold morning blast...ftw
