Doing a 5am-5pm shift today after having 4 hours sleep due to a nasty dose of man virus (more serious than man flu). Please share your employer's blatant disregard for your well being :(

Up at 4am. Flying Edinburgh to London for a "workshop", then flying back to Edinburgh this afternoon :headbang:

Been crazy for me the last 3 weeks. I got switched to second shift 3 weeks ago, go in at 3pm and get off at 11 pm, cool I get to go in, get off soon enough to get some rest and have my days to get stuff done.

3 weeks ago I work Monday night, get off and get some things done during the day Tuesday. Their calling for snow but nothing is happening so I go in Tuesday night,,, because snow is coming they close 2 & 3 Tuesday night and gonna be closed Wednesday... Now we did get some snow but the roads weren't bad so I head in Thursday, lol nope they closed for the whole week,,, no work no pay

So 2 weeks ago everything's back to normal worked the whole week, even overtime on Saturday. Cool I made up some of my lost time.

Then this week rolls around I worked Monday night, really hadn't paid attention outside Tuesday, got ready for work and started outside. Guess what, the ground was covered and snow was coming down. Haven't worked again this week but hoping to be able to go back tomorrow night.

On the bright side, I've been able to sort out a plan of attack on some problems I've found with the new Zed, and had some bonding time with the new pup.

4 month old Rottweiler who thinks everything is his chew toy lol

Same in my industry.

You get a day rate to do a 'professional day', which is anything from 8-24 hours. Current average is now back down to around a 10 hour day.

There's still the odd 5am start and 2am finish, but they're nowhere near as regular now, since we've finally onboarded the other half of the team that we've been waiting 6 months for.

Ah yes, that professional day definition. Ashame it does not apply to the expenses side which is nailed down to the penny ...

If you're ever down overnight and got some free time then let me know. We shall drink a beer. Maybe two. It's possible I'll even pay, but no promises

As for long hours... I was up at 4.45 the last two mornings, in the office by 7, didn't get home until 8pm and 7.30pm respectively.

Ahhh, the perfect thread...

For 8 weeks straight I was up at 5:10, out by 5:40 and then not back in the door until 7ish, this was Frimley and lasted until the last day of Jan.

"Phew" I thought to myself, but no..

I did a couple of single day stints in Cheltenham, which was up at 4:30 and gone by 5, home by 7/8

"Phew!!!!" I thought once more, but NO...

I'm now on an 8 week set of up at 5:30 out by 6 and back whenever the dartford bridge decides to let me through, could be 18:20, could be 22:00... This is Cambridge and I started this stint Tuesday.

On the bright side I'm getting some awesome project management experience. Oh, and if Bing's buying the beer, I'm going to London too! :poke:

I officially work offshore in Norway ..... The law here only allows you to work 135 days a year, what you might call a proper job lol

Got a call to come into the office to manage a 60 day project .... No worries, I could do that

3 year later I am still in the office managing yet another project lol

Last year I was 300 days away from home ..

There is hope though . Rumour has it I could have my old job back around September thus year ... :D

I get up at 6 out the door at 6.40 to catch a bus to work. Usually walk back through my door at about 6.30 it's a minimum of 11 hours a day door to door. Then at the moment doing 2 hours a night making of bits n bobs in my workshop. And I have been Bob the builder every weekend since about October. I think I have been lucky enough to have 4 days of not working on something since my birthday on the 5/10/2013.

Currently 5 weeks into an 11 weeks contract that sees me flying to Dublin early every Monday and back Thursday night.

Car service runs me around so they can max my work time :(

Relentless pace with all the joys of contract work

I have started taking trains everywhere so that I can get more work done, negating dead time in the car. Now that's sad...

I've been travelling back and forth to Sheffield every week for 5 months now, arguably less effort than flying but...

- Racking up silly miles on the zed
- I don't earn air miles
- It's at my own cost
- Flying to dublin would take a lot less time than heading down the M1/M42 on a Friday night lol

No doubt any regular long commute is a pain, but for me it's the dead time, not the 50 minute flight. In effect I'm up at 5 and arrive at my clients at 11. I have to pack up on Thursday at 4pm and get home at 9.30pm

The other real issue is the drinking - something special about Guinness in Ireland :)
