this cam issue seems to have cropped up from no-where! s54 ownership is getting scarier!! lol

So my car has been with my indy for five weeks now. The first three and a half waiting for a garage slot. They have now spent a week and a day installing the Schricks 280/272s. Got everything timed properly, and shimmed. Put everything back together and the EML came on. Turns out two of the valves needed reshimming again after some unexpected movement. So I am still waiting.... this is a pretty tricky job from all accounts. Test of nerves for everyone involved...

I'm starting to wonder if this cam issue is from this unexpected movement that may or may not be happening after these have been serviced.... Basically The people touching these engines messing up because I've have read many of these issue from the US forums, and their s54 numbers are considerably higher than the UK.

Aaand she's back with me!

Valve-train is quieter than it's ever been. Forgot how heavy the gear change, clutch and steering are!

Nice. I've previously been of the opinion that a warranty is not really worth it on these cars, however recent threads would suggest otherwise. I'd expect that the 'internal' Bmw bill would have been north of £3k. Happy motoring! You'll soon remember how the the heavy gearshift, steering etc makes for such an involving drive.

£0. The wonders of warranty! Unfortunately I didn't get an any paperwork saying what the parts cost etc.

Good work :) I can't say I'm not a little sad I didn't have a warranty lol

Been too busy with my M3 to look at this forum very often and then mostly the jokes. It was my car, and never tracked by me (got to use one owned by BMW on fahrer training course for that). I am pretty sure it was never tracked by either of the first 2 owners. It was serviced as required and I don't recall having any problems. Glad for your sake I had kept on the warranty.

Just to contrast. My Z has just ticked over 97k and has been on more trackdays than I can remember, and is just fine.

Don't panic people.

*waits for cams to detonate next week*

All depends, I've had my car just under 4 years so would have paid around £4,500 in warranty premiums.

I've replaced the battery and ignition switch myself all for under a £100, so even if this were to happen it would still be cheaper than having a warranty.

And the flipside of that is I had my Coupe for 2 years and needed a new gearbox, BT module / mic & exhaust that would have been over £6k.

How many miles though DPG? I play the low-miles-no-warranty game.

When I was doing more miles in the previous X5 I kept the warranty.

I was doing about 14k a year in the Coupe. I'm only doing about 3k in the M so starting to think about cancelling.

Agreed, I had a 3.5k warranty claim for a new head on my old 2.5si, and was parranoid after cancelling the warranty when I came to sell and had to drive to Yorkshire.

But 1.5-3k a year mileage if you can wield a spanner I think it's a no brainer. Just remind yourself how much you would have paid into a warranty if you ever have a large repair.
