Another camshafts and followers worn thread

Evening all,

I did mention briefly in another thread that my car had started to make some nasty metallic tappet noises, but thought I'd make my own thread for anyone interested.

Car started making loud metallic noises with revs over the course of 50 miles. For interest - it's 8000 miles since Insp 2 which was done at BMW, valve clearances were checked and adjusted. Took it back to the dealer, who initially tried to tell me it was low on oil because it was on the low marker on the dipstick less than 5 seconds after turning the engine off. (I was having none of it)

Three weeks of diagnostics and investigations later (including looking at all my service history) - I have worn cams and followers, and the repair will be covered under warranty. However, parts are on back order so I don't expect to see my car back any time soon.

For now I'm running around in a F11 520d estate - its massive!

Question - is it cheeky for me to ask for the Vanos to be checked over while the top is in bits?

You can ask, but unless they believe there is an issue there I doubt they will want to know.

Sad tale.... Although good news its in warranty..

Ask them, you have nothing to lose...

What miles are you currently on ?

Previous owner was a member here, lived out on one of the islands off Scotland, I can't imagine there are too many tracks there! Think there was one other owner - no idea whether it was tracked by them.

Very thankful for AUC warranty - even if it does mean I can't opt for replacement Schrick cams

This is being seen with worrying frequency.

Indeed but as i'm a glass half full thinker by the law of averages the more i see the less likely it is to be me  :? i dunno

I'm concerned by both frequency & attempted fobbing off by dealers with huge knowledge gaps on cars in general, let alone the finer parts of engines. Low on oil seems a default response by a fair few across a variety of cars.

Interested to know what the non warranty price would be for the work.

Follow Phillio's thread...

Im convinced its the extended service intervals that causes problems..The oil degradation must be a factor.

£3k/£4k figures being mentioned maybe more depending who does it & what other bits & pieces are thrown in

Interesting that Schrick offer DLC coated followers, I had the same done on my Nissan last time I replaced the cams.

What's the issue with getting some near stock lift Schrick cams and DLC coated followers which should be significantly less than 3/4k?

The £3/£4k was all in with labour , think the cams & followers were almost £2000

I think I recognise this car. It's a Midnight Blue like mine isn't it? From the OP's description of the previous owner I reckon it was the one previously owned by VvrooomM (who sold it and replaced it with a 987 Spyder) and then steve220 who lived on Moray IIRC. When VvrooomM sold it I think it was on about 30k and steve220 didn't have it that long before he sold it. I think (emphasis on the word think) VvrooomM did like to track his car but I'm not entirely sure. You'd have to check back through some of his posts I guess.

Found this which confirmed he did track the car. That doesn't mean this was inevitable though or necessarily the cause.

Unless there's something which makes the job 3x harder on a Z4M, the price for Shrick stock lift cams, DLC followers and labour was around £2k from Geoff Steel racing when I looked into it for the old M3.

I'm not giving you a quote , merely relating what was mentioned in another post on the subject of replacing the camshafts & followers :?

Here's the text from the post

Option 1. Sourcing good used second hand cams, I hate ebay as an option. I will ask the indy if they have any good condition cams as the first port of call.
Option 2.
SCHRICK CAMSHAFTS FOR S54 (B32) 6 CYL. 4 VALVE E46 M3 STAGE 1 - £1,212.02 inc. VAT
http://www.ca-int.co.uk/variants-Y2FyX2 ... 1NzE=.html

I assume the above stage 1 is the OEM spec?

UPRATED CAM FOLLOWERS E46 M3 & Z4M - £675.00 inc. VAT
http://www.ca-int.co.uk/single_prod-cHJ ... 9MTk=.html

Doesn't leave a lot for labour does it ?

I too thought the cams where approx £1200 and the followers around £30 each ??

Oil,gaskets and labour and VAT would stick you up near the 3k mark i would have thought...
