Am i mad? VXR8

Went to the ring last month with my next door neighbour who has a VXR8. MPG not really different to my M on a run (he gets 24mpg motorway driving), perhaps only 2-3 mpg in it although in town its awful and at 160mph was only just in double figures. However, it is huge and very fast. At 170mph clock speed on the limiter my car was running over 6000rpm, the VXR8 barely over 4000. Ring was hard work in the Vxl and although it has massive brakes and stopping isn't actually a problem the suspension isn't for that kind of action or for blasting through the Eifel mountains for that matter.
We both went to Santa Pod and the Z4M quicker every time on the 1/4 mile as the Vxl does an awful lot of tyre spinning and smoking but it sounds awesome and over a half mile or mile would have left mine for dead I think.
They are not comparable as cars (sports vs muscle) but if you want a big, comfortable (very in fact on long journeys) muscle car you won't get better value. And with the sports exhaust it makes you look every time

Errrr no chance i would trade a Z4M for a Vauxhaul, I used to own a Vectra SRi 2.5 V6 and it cost me an arm and a leg to maintain + the dealer didnt seem to be able source parts whenever it needed them (3 weeks off the road with the engine out waiting for a clutch). I know the car you mean and it is a serious bit of kit but its a Vauxhaul, they dont hold their value too great and its no where near as nice as a Z4M.

Try it out if there are no ties, but i think after driving the nimble Z4 you'll hate the size.

i don't like that its group 20 insurance and only does 20 mpg so :P

You wouldn't like mine then...Group 20 insurance and I'm averaging about 18 mpg around London, which is compounded by sheer right-footed delight when I do get out of town! :driving:

The Z4M is a lot quicker in a straight line.

Using Autocar's roadtest figures (which weren't great for the M because it was barely run in and in damp conditions):

VXR8 0-60 5.4, 0-100 13.2, 30-70 5.0, 50-70 in top 10.2, Top speed 155mph (limited), BHP 405, Torque (lb/ft) 375 weight 1840kg
Z4M 0-60 5.1, 0-100 11.9, 30-70 4.5, 50-70 in top 6.9, Top speed 155mph (limited), BHP 338, Torque (lb/ft) 269, weight 1464kg

Power to weight ratio for VXR8 = 220BHP/Tonne, for Z4M = 231BHP/Tonne

I don't think even the Bathhurst limited edition can match the Z4M.

When you factor in depreciation - they are £14k under list because they can't give them away !, and build quality as well doesn't seem to make a great deal of sense unless you needed the practicality.

i suppose it depends on how many miles a year you do, i do 20K plus so aint no good for me, my every day car needs to do 40mpg

these figures suprise me, thought the VXR would have been better than the Z4M

A Monaro or VXR8 still figures on my "cars to own" list - I'm just drawn in by the noise

Luckily I only cover 6-7k miles a year so the fuel cost would be managable for the worse mpg compared to my 3.0i. Perhaps one day if I ever need 4 seats...

In Australia the VXR8 is everywhere, except they called holden here. I have to say i have driven a few and i would prefer to own the Z4M anyday...

It does better than that to 100. When we did Santa Pod he was running 13.4 and we were just having a laugh.

Love the sound of those v8's in the vxr8/monaro9a few near me),and a big gm/vauxhall fan(from back in the day),tho i do think the z4m is the better choice

Would only go for the vxr8 if i could keep the z too :D

One of my mates just twin turbo'd his VXR8, and it is a serious bit of kit. it may be an auto, but its an affordable daily driver with 600HP!

I think it could be a good 2nd car, eg if you need a 4 door or can afford a 2nd car. But i prefer the handling of the Z4 so much more opposed to the licence destroying ferocious V8, its fast but the Z is much more usable fun.

If I had to have 4 seats then a Monaro/VXR8 would certainly be on the shortlist. There's not that many cars sub-£15k with comparable character or performance IMO. Too big to be a second car personally, I always think of second cars as being something small and 2-seater, e.g. Z4, MX-5, Caterham, etc.
