am I an idiot?

Which ever way you do it, its going to cost you and cost you a lot!

Its a fact of life that seems to surprise is every time :D

I reckon on a 50%(ish) loss ever three years.

Just wait, you need the rubber every 10k as well, so add another 100 on top per month, then insurance, service petrol, might as well work for BMW.

Sorry, I missed this question. The caterham belongs to a mate, funnily enough he's got a kennels and his missus is looking out for a VW van.... so he told me not to tell her, he wants to keep hold of his Denis the Menace!

negative equity is built in which is why it's on the high side, here's some pics of what's been/being passed on to the more patient and sensible folk;

Interested in trading an 05 reg Combo van for the Caterham?

Debbie wouldn't be happy giving up our dog van, but she'd get over it.

:poke:

I know a guy who used to buy two new BMWs every couple of years. Performance saloon for him; sporty number for his wife. Had used the same dealer for years. A few years back he put his name on the waiting list for an E60 M5. Specced it up nicely and it came in at just over £70k. Anyway, he eventually took delivery and six weeks later he was in his dealership when they took delivery of one of the first RHD M6s. He was quite taken with the idea of being the first at his golf club with one of these, so he asked whether he would be able to buy it. Oh yes, certainly. That'll be £83k sir. Then they offered him.... £38k for the M5. And he did it.... :o

Point of the story. If you're an idiot, there's always someone who's an even bigger idiot. I try to remember this whenever I get a terrible urge to ponder over the merits of spending £3000 modifying a £6000 car - or spending £13k restoring a £5k car, or.... you get the idea

I don't see such people as idiots though.....assuming he has the money to support such purchases, and more importantly, losses, then why is he an idiot?

For instance, he is paying for the privilege of owning a new car every 2 years, then the privilege of showing off to his mates at the golf club.

Sure, he's paying tens of thousands of pounds for this, but do we know his financial background? For instance, is he a city banker who is getting million pound bonuses?

OK. I didn't make myself too clear with my post... The point I was trying to make was this. In response to BB07NER's 'am I an idiot?' question, if he wants to keep increasing his monthly lease figure, that's up to him. Someone else will always look at it and think he's mad. Others, like the M5 / M6 guy would think nothing of dropping £30k in a few weeks and no doubt some people would look at that and think the same. People would look at what I've spent modding a 9 year old car and think the same of me. I wasn't making a judgement of who's and idiot and who's not... mainly because I'm clearly in no position to do so myself

It can never make sense to buy cars on whims and fancies by we all do it - well here we do!

Otherwise we would all be driving very sensible cars and driving around with faces like smashed crabs! :D

Dropping £30k on a car in 6 weeks to buy a new one to impress the golf club is pure vanity, IMO - not an indicator of great character, or an ability to hold onto all that cash he must have for very long into the future, also IMO. Chucking £30k away is pretty stupid, whatever way you look at it. That said, would it have been worse if he'd simply kept the M5 and bought the M6 too I wonder...

I wasn;t thinking you were judging, I was just telling it from my opinion...

...cos I also am in no position to judge (I need an estate car for my work....I bought a Z4....now who's an idiot ? )

Yes, losing vast sums of money on a car is silly in some ways, when you look at the actual value of that money, but to some individuals £30k may be throw away money (I wish!!!).

The bloke might be seriously minted - £30k to you or me might be a chunk of salary but to him just pocket change!

That is very true Ronk... Shouldn't judge people from my own financial level :D

back on topic... I've still not told the wife yet, but my cunning plan is forming nicely.

I've resorted to do a 'back to the future' about a conversation I've not yet had where my FD and commercial director increase my car allowance by £250 a month. Funnily enough when I told the wife how well the meeting went she started laughing and said "so what are you getting next!?" you know you're playing it right when you don't have to lay the punch line 8)

Providing the meeting happens and goes to plan then it'll be alright (which is doable). Meeting should happen around end of August, car comes in september and I'll tell her that I'm getting a new seraphite in a few weeks... it's amazing how the dealerships can deliver on spec in such a short space of time :p

:driving:

just for the record, I'm not normally such a lieing bastard and it's probably the only thing i'll cheat on, but that is circumstantial.

I'll post another update when she lands (the car, not the wife)

Erm, good luck with all of that!

^^ You'd have my cash! I'm hopeless at poker but when it comes to Z-subterfuge I'm a different beast

Masterplan is holding well, I told my better half yesterday that I was placing the order on Monday... she's been pushing back for me to get 18"s because she doesn't like the ride on the 19 runflats... she has a point when the road surface is crap. For those of you who know Sheffield you'll know the state of the roads, so I've settled her on the 19's and we've agreed to take her motor for town and the Z for everywhere else... I think a good compromise. Delivery date confirmed: 4th September 8)

Talking of road surface, has anyone driven on the roads in Mallorca? we went there in May and had an audi A3 for the week, the road surfaces were the best i've been on. *Sigh, Sheffields roads
