Aero Skirts

I love the look of BMW aero skirts on the Z4MC and am about to order a set. Lots of people on this forum have them and their cars look great. But before I pull the trigger, I want to ask the group if there are any negative issues I need to consider. Are they difficult to install? Do they integrate with the car as seamlessly as the standard OEM panels? Are any irreversible modifications required in the installation? Once installed, are there any problems or unintended consequences? Thanks in advance for your replies!

I thought it might be nice to bring this thread to closure by summarizing my own experience fitting BMW aero skirts to my 07 M Coupe. I purchased the skirts from Tischler BMW (getbmwparts.com), for a total cost, with shipping, of $520.90 USD (primed). In addition, I paid a guy at BMW North Scottsdale $275 USD to paint and clear them to match the car (black sapphire metallic). Installation looked easy, so I did that myself. The main thing you need to know is that, if you're careful, all of the connectors and weather seals from the stock skirts are reusable (some extra connectors and one extra weather seal come with the kit just in case you screw up). No special tools are required for the installation. The only quirky thing was that I had to trim a small amount of material (about 1/2" x 1/8") from the top/front/inside corner of the passenger side skirt, so that it would match up properly with the wheel well body work above. This was done using a razor knife and took about 15 seconds. The total job takes about 1 to 2 hours if you take your time and could be done faster if you know what you're doing. The fitted aero skirts integrate with the car as seamlessly as the standard OEM side panels and no irreversible changes required, so you can easily reverse the modification any time. While the alteration in appearance is a little more subtle on a black car than, say, a silver one (e.g., dubseed), the overall effect is quite nice and I'm very pleased with the outcome.

Thanks to everyone who provided information and encouraged me to go ahead with this modification.

When I put my short plates on, I had to fill 13 holes in the front bumper... !! God knows how many times they screwed new holes for changing plates etc.... :(

Shame you've got bolt holes on the front though!
I agree! The car originally was registered in Nebraska where front plates are required by law. Fortunately we don't have such nonsense here in Arizona. I'll get around to fixing the holes one of these days... probably when I have to do a front bumper respray. But in the meantime, I'm just enjoying the car and the modification process.

Big fan of the Aero skirts, the light catcher surface on them is much more effective on the dark Z4's. Which you seem to loose on the standard body work and almost can be unnoticeable in certain lights.

If only they were cheaper!

That makes at least three of us... wonder if a dealership will do a deal if we go to them? Perhaps Sopers or Harry Fairbairn?

If this is a group buy, which neither my mum nor my bank manager want it to be, I'm interested. God help me...

If a group buy is on, then count me in too!

Ok, seeing as both of mine now need paint to the leading edge after the @rsehole slammed me on the roundabout, they will be getting painted when the car goes in.... So man maths = may as well have some aero skirts already in primer to "save on the paint costs" :)

So, I'll be interested in a group buy :)

A few of us have enquired in the past and with the shipping costs after discount it didn't work out any cheaper.

Good luck though.
