A racist incident, your thoughts....

i see what he's saying here, bit like a 3 or 4 year old spouting what they 'see'...no one knows the geezer who insulted so it's difficult to say if his actions were precipitated by racist views or if he failed to retard his stupidity and ignorance.

if you're studying sociology boss why write off others' opinions as shallow and bollocks? i think maybe you need to fundamentally review the subject you are studying - it's not one I've studied myself, but if you're expert you wouldn't write off anyone's opinion as shallow or bollocks - you would surely attempt to context their opinion and see it from their perspective?

my only view would be if the geezer who flung these insults about has a family that suffer as a result of this incident then maybe, indirectly, the punishment is a little harsh for the crime.

I think your missing the point, the contractor insulted him so Stark reported him.

If some dickhead prick insulted me id report him too.
Hes at work and is supposed to behave as such. The consequences were probably more severe because what he said was derogatory to a race.
Everybodies racist to some varying degree but you still treat everyone equally regardless of that.
 
Nightyard, Gerry, it appears, would miss the point even if it stabbed him in the face, so rest easy knowing that there is no helping some people.

I didn't play a race card, and do you know what, if a highways operative called my mrs a whore or a slag, or insulated my mum or anything else or anyone close to me, I would have done the same thing.

For eg, say this bloke spat at me or my car as I drove past, and I had a witness, I would have still reported him.

These are professional workers, employed by National Grid, and if they can't behave in public office, outside, then they deserve everything they get. If he has a family, he should have thought about acting like a tool before he shouted his mouth off.

I felt the guilt, and I was about to mitigate on his behalf, but too many people, including on here, agree that you can't act like this and expect to get away with it. Change the environment, if someone did that in my office, you'd be up for gross misconduct quicker than an E89 depreciates!!!!

I am asking this question purely for enlightenment and NOT to be provocative/confrontational. Is the caste system, as practiced in India and other countries, social "racism"? If so, why is it still tolerated?

At the end of the day what he did is not only out of order but also a criminal offence.

I wouldn't expect to be spoken to like that by anybody especially not somebody at work.

Taking away the "black" part it would still be deemed as causing distress or harrasment (Section 5 Public Order Offence).

Add the "black" part and it becomes a racially aggrivated offence which personally i don't think is entirely fair but that's another story.

I'm sure the offence was not "aggrivated" by your race as others have picked up on. He was going to call you a c*nt anyway.

I'm 100% sure if any of you were to use the same language in your workplace i would be deemed gross misconduct and the chances are you would get sacked. How anyone can try and justify it is beyond me.

Pretty much the end of it for me. I think whatever you say about it just being a word and an insult no different from any other, in this day and age with all the social and political feelings and stimuli from racist language, a person knows completely and utterly what they're doing when they use a racial slur and you do it intentionally and more importantly consciously knowing what you're doing when you use such language. Any attempt to pretend otherwise is just naive and futile IMO.

I was exaggerating, but yeah I'd report them it's disrespectful and unprofessional apart from being abusive. What if the next person they call a c*** is a nervous little old lady who it might absolutely terrify, it's bang out of order.

It's a bit like if you poke a small puppy in the face you'll probably get away with it.... try it with a fully grown doberman and you probably won't. Same as if you are off-duty and call someone a name you'll probably get away with it... if you are on-duty then you probably won't.

At the end of the day it's a basic form of Darwin Award... I don't have any sympathy for those who cry racism all the time, but I also don't have sympathy for those who abuse others in a verbal or physical manner, especially in a work environment.

Here is a clear example why the confrontation happened in the first place - some people think it's OK to be abusive & others understand it's not acceptable.

In Z4M-2006's case, he think's it's OK to use it, why I don't know & seems he'd be surprised if someone wrapped a scaffold pol round his head if he called someone he didn't know what I deem as 'a useful implement'

I don't judge whether it's right or wrong for others to use it, iit simply comes down to if you're going to mouth off, you have to take responsibility for the consequences ... if you don't understand this, you only have yourself to blame
 
And another thing which annoys me... It's not "just a word" atall. By definition all words have meanings and carry messages with them otherwise it would just be a sound.

If someone came up to you and said "I'm going to stab you" that's "just words", but through being a fully developed and reasoned human being with thought and sound processing skills you decipher the meaning of the 5 syllables to mean he wants to hurt you.

If someone calls you a c***, then depending on various individual factors different people will take take that to mean different things. Yes some people may just take it at face value as a meaningless insult but others may see it as a personal verbal attack, or worse a warning of imminent violence in the wrong context. How you take something is irrelevant you need to be aware and empathetic enough that others will take things different and if you can't empathise through common sense that calling someone a black c**t whilst at work is wrong on every level then to be honest you don't have the responsibility and social skills to operate in society let alone in public job.

Jembo...I never said it was ok to use "it"......Please quote me where i did?? And god knows what the scaffold pole references have got anything to do with name calling...

If you look at the situation,and where,how and why the confrontation happened then it was just hollow words,not a physical threat or punches thrown..

I shall repeat,what he said was wrong,there is no denying that... Should he lose his job for saying it ?...IMHO...no....

I got called insulting names most nights of the week by strangers for years,it was part of the job i guess.....I never thought for a minute that they should be put on the dole because of it.

he was a w***er for what he said without a doubt, but I tend to agree with the above. move on, you'll never see the chap again, he'll get dumped on his arse by someone who can be bothered at some point.

I tend to let others deal with life's eventualities; unless I suspect that rolling over will have repercussions for me, or for someone who can't deal with it themselves. like a little old lady.
