A couple of battery questions

My battery is losing charge more than it should so I've ordered a new one. In cold weather is it ok to store the new battery overnight in the boot of another car parked outside before fitting it to the Z4 the next day? Or is it advisable to store it indoors overnight where it's warmer? I didn't want to degrade the battery as soon as I get it. Does installing the battery keep it warmer??!

And is it definitely worth coding the battery before registering it? The new one is an 80ah 800 cca vs the previous 70ah 760 cca

Unless it drops below -15c then outside is ok..

No effects on its long term performance subject to that temp limit

The only thing that affects the battery performance is its temperature..all batteries lose perfromance as they get colder..but its when it goes well below 0c that its bad..

It needs to be coded then registered..no ifs or buts

Is the normal state of charge for the e89 70-80% to allow for regen braking charging? Or would it be higher?

75% or so is the SoC that the DME attempts to maintain..otherwise there wouldn’t be anywhere to pump the alternator juice into on say long downhill descents..

Alternator does 210 amp peak..car only uses 50 ish amps if that most of the time …so say you have 150 amps spare charge..

70 ah battery at 75% full has 17 amp hours ish of empty ‘space’…at 150 amp charge rate it would be full in 7 minutes..

Lots of very clever calcs are taking place all the time..

On my ID4 Motion digital cluster I can bring up bus voltage as one of the gauges…it goes up n down like a fiddlers elbow..from under 12v to 14.5 ish..

So you'd recommend not to charge a battery to 100% before installing it?

It doesn’t matter…the IBS will once registered will work it out ..it will allow the battery to ‘decay’,to 70-80%.I leave mine on trickle charge most of the time so it starts many journeys at 100%..

The DME just won’t use regenerative braking if there’s nowhere for it to store it..
