6k for engine swap

Having painstaking read all of this, I genuinely think the best option for YOU is to supercharge the four banger.

a) You have a lot of room in bay so surely it's possible? Even if not widely done.

b) You get to keep the original engine

c) You can keep building on the power if you wish. I see no reason they couldn't pull 280 odd horses out of the 2.0 without a great effort considering your budget

I've come from a Renault scene where the guys are getting really decent figures out of charing the 2l 4pots, I'd talk to someone who specialises in supercharger kits, and see what they can come up with.

i thought the issue with this route is the engine couldn't take it without heavy modification, or am i missing the point?

With a £6k figure in mind for the engine upgrade, considering he's owned the car from new, I'd rather have a full supercharger setup, keep tweaking the power up until I blew the internals and then went forged. Or even go forged early on. My point was that within his budget for an //M engine, he could charge his own quite easily. I'll be the first to admit I know nothing about charging the 2.0 petrol bmw's but I'm sure there will be a few tuners who do, or who would be keen to give it a go.

I'm not suggesting try to make 350+ horses, but even 280 with the weight of the 2.0 z4 is going to feel pretty damn swift. Add a decent LSD to that and you'd have a great fun car with performance to match. IMO, any car that makes 200 bhp/ton is a very fun car. Power to weight is more important that outright power.

Yes but this is exactly the problem There's nothing easy adding FI to an engine that's not designed for FI. Its not really been done to a 2.0 in my knowledge, so your cars effectively going to be a guinea pig. That means constantly off the road, problem after problem. You can't just stick a supercharger to an engine and fingers crossed that it will work, the engine's not designed for FI so its a total unknown. Unless your very handy with a spanner, this is the worst of all the routes to go down IMHO.

From what I've read 340 is the aimed hp… because the 3.0 makes near 280 at 250 therefore would you be happy spending that much and getting similar performance to the 3.0, when he could sell his and spend a few grand and buy a 3.0Si… which would be more sensible.

Non of it makes financial sense, then like you say it will probably ruin the engine anyway (pretty sure the block isn't particularly strong, so not sure it would even take a SC and there are no companies currently making a kit that is renowned, which is why nobody has done it because in the lineup adding power to the 4 pot is pointless) and need serious upgrades in the future that will cost yet more money, then you have a mid range Z your spending 40+k on over its life time.

When you add the price of the car, I'm assuming new it was around 23-25k then the 9k mods already then another 6k thats 38k minimum for a car that would be a little quicker than a 3.0Si which were cheaper than that new and the Ms started at 40ish? Now mint MR garage queens are 15-16k and good cars 13-14k.

Insane when you look at it like that.

You can't even call it depreciation because the engine would need so much modification you couldn't remove it and put it back to stock to sell it. Then if you sold it with anyone with any sense would be like car made by BMW with more power… piece of mind, and all the rest of the bits that go with it, or a 2.0 with a SC? No brainer M everyday.

Logically, financially and financially it makes no sense.

But, I'm pretty sure JE is aware of this and still wants to do it. That's fine, it's his car, his money and more importantly it's his perogative.

I think he also understands that he will never see any of his 9k mods, or £6k engine swap again. He's burnt £15k, but he's enjoying the process, so money well spent in his eyes.

If JE is holding onto a remnant of hope that changing the engine and his mods make his car more valuable than any other 2.0 is good condition, he is very much misguided, but I don't think he is.

The fact that his car has an appalling service history and has been so heavily modded will make it much less desirable than comparable mileage stock cars. But, he doesn't want to sell, so it really doesn't matter. Trying to tell him that it's not financially sensible is really missing the point of what he wants to achieve.

Take your time thinking Jonny. You can always come back for more advice under a new thread in a few weeks ;)

Seriously. The 3.0i has less miles and would be a perfect car for you to transplant mods to. Take the full interior from yours and you'll never know the difference. On a 10 year old car with the same parts, surely that's the winner? £8k is cheap and you can sell the standard 4 pot for £5k, so net cost is £3k

This really is the best way to go. You're not the only guy to love a car from new. I bought my Zed from a guy last year that bought it from new, it was immaculate and still had that new car smell, only 28,000 miles (2006), kept in a garage and never used in the rain. The cars are out there, need to be patient and take your time looking.
If anything, it makes me want to be more careful due to knowing how much it was loved before me... yes I've owned many cars from brand new, and I still get that special feeling with the second hand Zed.

Two services over 33k i dont see as bad personally, the fact the car felt no better after a full BMW service tells me no harm done to my car.
And yes the point is that i know im throwing good hard earned money after bad but i will never have to sell her and if i do i will be a old man with a vintage car in corking nik,
The power i want i dont need just something i would like to have, a supercharger would get 70bhp minimum more and for 10k which is my most prefered choice but then its 10k!!
As for my threads on this even tho its nothing new always seems to promote plenty of interest, comments, disagreements which is great for this forum.
By the time ive finished my Zed she will look perfect inside out with some unique mods so maybe i need to be happy with what i have, besides petrol aint getting any cheaper lol

Which is fair play and your enthusiasm is great and what I like about you is it doesn't matter what people say you do what you want!

But I think the statement "i will never have to sell her and if i do i will be a old man with a vintage car in corking nik" won't be true. If you can get the car to work and be reliable then yes you will, but will need a lot of money spent on it until that time just keeping it working, like Beedubs his is awesome but needs so much attention it never gets out of the garage, which in my opinion is pointless having it in the first place. But his is truly desirable because it was built on the proper platform to begin with. But you could spend the money and end up with a white elephant which isn't really what we want for you, beedub knows what he's doing and does a lot of work himself. Could get to the point where its so depressing you won't want to use it! But it could be the turning point for you too, a new skill doing the work yourself. I would love a project to learn how to do anything myself but its having something you don't care too much about to do the work on so if it doesn't work its doesn't pull the heart strings not the pride and joy!

This week I've got a problem with my Z, a second sticky calliper in 2 years and although a small problem and easy fixed, I feel like just locking it in the garage and leaving it because its annoying and I'm emotionally attached to it and it pisses me off when its not working properly, I haven't driven it a lot recently and feel like just getting rid because when things go wrong it taints the experience. But at the end of the day its a car!!! Not a person! Its easy to fix send it to the garage and they'll swap the calliper cost me £100 excess and thats it done, forgotten about.

Feel the same when it gets chipped marked etc. BMW pressure washed it last time it went in when my xenon went and the water has got under the paint on the front bumper and has a 2cm bubble, so although small I know its there so that needs sorting too, it needs taxing at the end of the month and another set of tyres soon. That lot will probs be the best part of 2k these things add up annoy me because its not perfect but its such a small amount of effort to put right and is part of ownership. In a stupid way making the issues right makes you feel better about doing it and the fact you did it, I suppose a sense of achievement in a small way. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and sort it, move pride out the way and do whats sensible. Cars cost money as they are without putting insane mods that could possibly make or break the experience.

Now if the engine blew up or it was so unreliable because of something I have done and spent as much as I paid for the car doing so I would hate it, I think I would actually be depressed at that thought and just cut my losses and get rid of it and probably not want one again. Then think what I could have had and feel even worse.

Then I think about the rest of my life, I was lucky I bought the car at 23 and now nearly 26 still my dream car (apart from a 911 ), the car costs a lot (with my OCD like you) but is still worth a good amount and if I sold it I could buy all the cameras and lenses I've ever wanted and go and travel round the world… probably have the time of my life, change the person I am for life and do all the things I want before I get too old or have to settle etc But at the same time don't want to get rid of it, its mine and took a lot of hard work and sacrifice to buy and theres a pride to buying one as it was my dream car. Like you I got a lot of stick when I first got it as I was the youngest at the time to own one on the forum. Got the spoilt brat comments, jealousy from the older members, you'll never insure it blah blah, but the difference is I enjoy my job and work full time and run my own business on the side I work bloody hard which is why I'm not on here a lot anymore and don't drive the car a lot atm hence the lack of car photo threads from me.

Having it is like a finger up to them and I also wanted one now rather than later when life takes over marriage kids etc etc so trust me we've all been there, and continue to go through it. Look at Inkeys/Pazas buying trends recently, I wish I had the balls like Paza to just get rid and buy something else not worry it was a bad decision, theres always another car… and they had to change to experience something else, due to circumstance or just lust for something else if it doesn't work out sell and buy again and the trend continues. In the back of my mind I'm like well sell it do it, come back and buy another… but will I find one as good? Of corse I will, but that doesn't change the fact I want to keep it. But unfortunately you can't have everything, and in the process of buying a house either to live in or rent while I go traveling the car will probably go sooner rather than later which is a depressing thought.

Suppose what I mean is that its just metal and you make it your own, regardless of what its like when you buy it. Aesthetics are the easy bit like you've proved with yours and how good it looks its the mechanicals which are the difficult bit, which is why I went for the M instead of another one, I wanted the best BMW made in the Z range without compromising reliability, costs etc Which is why they are so sought after atm.

Sorry to get a bit wet, but not all of us reveal all, all the time and believe it or not we all go through the same process. Its a man thing haha.

Jonny, where's the power figure come from? Have you driven a fair few 3.0si 's?

If not, I'd suggest doing it, because if you could cope with that level of power, rather than trying to go "daft" as such, you may find a FAR better deal on a way to do things.

I'll let you drive mine Jonny - even though it's an auto I think you'd be very pleasantly surprised. As long as you don't mind slumming it in a car with a slightly worn bolster and 95k miles of stone chips on the bonnet

Diff and some lol.

You keep ,mentioning changing the diff
Guessing the whole rear axel and drive shafts and propshaft for starters (this includes the "diff") will be different.
Also suspension as the cars whole curb weight will be drastically different especially the front)

Look up ALL the part numbers for your cars Drive system and compare them to part numbers for a 3.0lt Z4, if it differs chances are it'll need changing. Including some engine mounting fabrications.

The 3L block is 90k heavier, the top final gear ratio is 0.15 less in the 3L, i dont know much about engine but what i understand is that the suspension would need changing, gear box no and whole rear end would need changing, plus the mounts, larger heat sheild required i guess.
That's why people have been telling you to buy the low mileage 3l and move your mods over - no hassle with major mechanical modifications, you can do 90% of the work and save a fortune

Check the propshaft too,
id guess its shorter on the 3.0 and M's because of the different engine size/dimensions. Thats not going to be a straight forward thing.
It racks up to gutting the whole car underneath (give or take a few bits).
Thats why EVERYONE is suggesting buy a new car as swapping the other cosmetic parts is easy.

Id much rather spend a weekend swapping some seats and interior parts a hood and lights over from 1 car to another as opposed to some Major mechanical hardware which will take several months worth of weekends tons of headaches too.
