I think the PH article is aimed at people who buy stick on tat for their car and is pointing out they could have a much better/faster/nicer car if they added what they were going to spend on modding the one they are looking at now.
I understand that all the subjective stuff about cars affects us all to a greater or lesser extent, hence there are people who have spent 50k on
