Its a good idea. But has one big flaw, JE would need £13-£15k (???) ready to buy a M without selling the other car first. Not many people have that kind of money lying around collecting dust, not for a car anyway.

Therefore he should keep his z as is.... and buy an M as well he could always go for a coupe and have one for all weathers...!! First though he ought to drive one to see if he can handle it, and that it suits....
Its just a car. Sell it, move onto to something else with more power if that what you want; rather than dicking around with major modding that will be more trouble than its worth and pretty much valueless to anybody but yourself at the end.

While I think your car is a great looking example johnny, and I can see the appeal of being its original owner, I would go the M buying route also, as I did. I had a 3.0 which for years, like others, had spent modding/adding Bigger Brakes, Strut brace,exra storage, 2-tone winter wheels, and it had a fairly rare m-sport fleck/chequered panel in the seats, Full Extended Leather ,etc etc. I had wanted to Supercharge it at a cost of 4k all in, but decided it doesn't make sense, even tho I had owned it from 18months old and had it over 5yrs.....better solution is buy a nice looked after/sensible mileage M. imho

Life is a bout experience Id hate to think id hung on to something and not experienced other things because I wasn't the first owner... When it comes to things like this for most people buying new is out of the questions, maybe not buying it but the thought of loosing so much money and what you can have for a lot less... 10k is a lot of money and so is spending 6k on an engine transplant lol
You could have been enjoying an M all along without worrying about how to improve it.
BMW built a line up for this reason and which is why the 2.0l sits at the bottom and the M at the top thats the upgrade ladder in its simplest form.

£9k is alot to spend, but its a price for making it your own. Do what you like Jonny, its your hard earned money, not ours.

A bigger engine means a faster 0-60 better balanced car but nothing more when it comes to either a 2L,2.2, 2.5,3 or 3.2 on a Z4, mine even looks better then a stock M just not as fast.lol
Apart from the red roof and different wheels how does your look better then a stock M?
The M front is more aggressive, and has an M bonnet!
With the roof down you still have the dated grey panels and no M seats...
So i would have to disagree with that point... But i still think you should drop a better engine in.

He is missing the point though... No xenon headlights, basic audio, no mod cons which a M has as standard make it a better car.
Plus tinny doors on the pre facelift, grey interior plastics, no hydraulic steering... The list goes on!
