6k for engine swap

I'm kinda with Steven - that price is so much (to justify even bothering imo), but it seems too little to flip a 2.0 to an M, so i think you'll end up with half the finish product you want. .... But i know you love your car and want to keep yours... so personally I suggest for that money, go for something Unique. Maybe bigger, maybe something nobody has done. This isn't an M car, so make it a JE car - whack a nuts engine in it (V8), or supercharge it.

Equally - what i think matters nothing. Do exactly what you want - if you genuinely wanted the forum opinion you'd of bought an M ages ago :P I'm still excited to see the final product

Also - a 2.0 to a S54 with turbo+ is a huuuuge change, more than anything you've done so far. Beedub is your man!
 
Remember after all the money and all the time, you would still have a 2.0 se, with a S54 engine. It won't be a Z4m!

If you want a Z4m, get one!! Don't try and bud one. BMW spent time engineering and doing it!!
 
i think the point is he's made it pretty clear he doesn't want to - i'd argue he's building more of an Alpina than an M.

Have you actually had a quote for a 2.0i with an M engine? I suppose Adrian Flux might do specialist insurance, but worth checking out prior to ripping your engine out

£6k for the engine, diff, clutch and gearbox? And installation? Seems extremely competitive, which is good.

You'll need brakes, new exhaust (your existing one will be too restrictive I suspect), new suspension, you'll probably want new steering and maybe some wider rims on the rear (are yours 8J? at 225?). So all in all, maybe add another £3k. That's £9 total.

Personally I think you will be very foolish to put any engine in that could have been supplied in a E85.

If your going to that much bother do it right do something different. I know v8s and v10s have been done. But they are a lot less common than any straight 6 in a z4!!

Just my thoughts if it where my cash. It's yours at the end of the day.

Have to agree. Might as well buy an ///M otherwise. And as said it wint be a one owner car anymore. Probably serviced better though.
 
waste of time and money imo, for what, at the end of it all youll have anon standard codge up worth less than a standard m, with insurance issues , you will severely limit your resale market too, buy an m, then if you re feeling flush and you still want more power then supercharge it, the work involved to do that swap properly and to upgrade the rest of the running gear and management systems is just massive, and to my mind pointless :?

As much as I love the s54 block (and happy you've picked a decent engine), personally it's stupid to put so much into the car.

Leave it be and buy an m as well
 
Financially it makes no sense at all - but there again neither do most mods. Emotionally it's a different story - if you have the money and the desire then it's your decision irrespective of what the rest of us think.

Personally my "mad money" limit is a lot less. But your cash, your desire, your choice.

My concern would be reliability with all the "bodging" that would be required.... just buy the ///M
 
would it really be bodging? the cars are pretty generic on the shell and stuff so if they are simply going to get a fucked /m abd cross over everything then i doubt there will be any bodging at all.

you can get an s54 engine on the bay for 2K (yes it will be 100K but you can still get it) so 6K is possibly right.

JE you've been banging on about this for ages, if you've got the cash to burn then do it and screw us pessimists :D. thing is your now talking of supercharging the new engine and so on and so on. just keep the z as is and buy a fast car out of the bat with 400 bhp.

Don't do it. Get an M for daily driver and keep the 2.0 as a garage queen. Surely the best of both worlds in your world.

Yes. Not everything will be plug and play, so some customisation will be required. Plus you're also removing and refitting parts of the car that would not normally be touched, this could\will lead to reliability problems.

If you put the £6k towards a ///M you'll still have a car worth £12-15k. If you fit a S54 engine to your 2.0, you're car will be unsellable in my view, as everyone else would just buy the factory built ///M. In fact, I'd expect the car to be worth less than it is just now, but then it's only worth what someone will pay for it which will be very little.

This makes no sense, surely it would be the other way round… and the 2.0 would never get used...
