6k for engine swap

Would you be better off going for the N52 3.0ltr engine? It may save you a couple £K and you'd still have 280bhp.

I'm bored with seeing the same question raised every few weeks...

So I say just do it, but do it soon

I agree it is a little bit 'groundhog day' I will be amazed if he ever does an engine swap to be honest. But I live in hope...

If it was me I'd sell it and buy the M you seem to want.

You're going to have masses of "fun" and expense trying to make it all (mostly) work, then you'll have masses of expense (and no fun at all) trying to insure it at anything like a realistic cost (whichever bigger engine you put in)

It'll be a modified car (and still not an M) and I guess you'll probably only ever get it insured with specialists, and, the same issues will follow you should you try to sell it.

Then again, you want to keep this car and it's your cash to spend as you wish.

Why not buy an E46 M3 (dirt cheap) and swap the engine and diff over. Then you could sell the M3 with a 2 litre engine to somebody who wants the looks of an M3 without the running costs. Genius idea or what?!!

Stop fluffing about and go buy a damaged m5 .......... V10 transplant

THOUGHTS
You can get a standard ZM roadster for £12K. Let's say your current cars worth £6k, buy a ZM roadster, Sell yours (equates to £6k spend), drive that for a month, and then look to turbo/supercharge that.

£6k to put a ZM engine in a (sorry but lets face it) 'Old' Z4 2.0lt car, but with out all the Standard uprated ZM kit etc... and the at extra cost (prob +£5k) to turbo that, you end up with a car that WILL have constant faults and issues. From experience having built a 235bhp Ford series 1 RS 1.8lt Escort Turbo (there 1.6 standard with 132bhp) & a 220bhp 1.4 R5 turbo, car like these are a nightmare.

To "Turbo" a Z4 isnt just a case of Bolting a turbo on the Manifold, it requires a whole load of other parts and thousands pounds thrown at them to work, before you consider the whole ECU/CPU needs chucking away and a new (crude) bespoke engine wiring loom version being made. In the past this was alot easier with Ford CVH engines and Vaxhauls C20XE engines.

Its not just "Diff" you change, the Drive shafts & hubs need upgrading, bearings, brakes, cooling, new inletmanifold, charge cooler, a LARGE Oil cooler too.........
Then you have to consider changing the compression, new pistons, maybe a whole new crank, new valves and cams.........

Even if you can crack this still, some old bald bloke will still over take you at the lights in a £10k Vauxhall VX220 :poke:

[edit] and then it has to pass the MOT noise and emission test that didnt exist when i built cars

On a PLUS side nothings impossible, a mate of mine is building a Fiesta with a BMW V8 engine :driving:

Modding a car is foolish but most of is do it.

I say go for it... £6k is a steal, and is only 0.01% of your mod budget.

Right. I have the answer.

1. Buy a decent titanium silver M

2. Swap all of the body panels/parts. And I mean all of them - wings, wing mirrors, doors, skirts, boot, front & rear bumpers, roof etc.

3. Except the bonnet - get that corrected / resprayed

4. Swap the mats over and the steering wheel, plus any other bits that make your car 'yours'

5. Don't forget the stubby

6. Sell your car.

If you do this you will have transplanted all of your car that visually & emotionally makes you proud about how mint it is onto a car that is totally M - engine, steering rack, chassis, suspension, driveshaft, gearbox, diff, suspension, exhaust, brakes... For about £6k and a respray. Only downside is funding the M up front. But as yours is paid for, get a bank loan to bridge the gap, pay it off as soon as you sell yours.

Sorted

JE's refusal to buy a different car is because this one has only ever been his, he's had it since new etc etc. But with all the mods (and now a leggy 2nd hand engine) I can't help but think that it'll be a bit like Trigger's broom!!

This sort of thing has to be the way to go. I've devoted years to my 3.0 and so if I ever went to an ///M I'd return mine to near OEM and transplant all the special parts to the ///M. As bing says you get all the emotional stuff transplanted and lose all the weak parts associated with the 2.0

Still who am I to talk having fitted a small block Chevy in old Jeep tug along with gearbox, transfer case, axles and on and on, just because I could ....

I thought it was his parents car originally, which he bought off them?

An engine transplant is a completely ridiculous idea unless, like StevieW (?), you are going to completely bonkers with a V10 and can do all the work required yourself. It's the only way you'll know a) it's been done right, b) that everything has been changed that needs changed - because it's not as simple as just an engine, pretty much all the mechanicals need upgraded, and c) it'll cost a fortune to insure and if it goes 'bang' then I'd bet it'll be a custom repair or a write-off.

You'll also get a warranty with an M if you choose wisely and spend the money on maintaining it. I'm pretty sure changing panels won't void a mechanical warranty, right ?

Worst bit would be to spend £6k and for it not to work.... or even worse, for the engine to fail shortly after fitting it :(
