Haha yep - thats the other way to do it. Mute used to be an option but not since they adeed the stupid floating symbol on screens while it is..
 
Many thanks for all the help. I have found that putting the TV on 'mute' and using the sound bar remote to control the volume works OK.

We were trying to revert back to the previous system where one remote (SKY) covers all the functions.

Have read that its possible to reprogramme the sky remote to do this but because of guarantees etc I'm loathe to try.

Bottom line is an independent specialist? is coming Thursday to take a look.

On the sound bar itself, we've not been totally impressed with the overall sound levels, generally its around 75/80% of the max. volumne.

Either you must all be deaf or you have it in a 50feet by 50feet room.
We watched a film again last night and our sound bar which turns up to a number of 50 was only on 12 so only on just over 20% of it's capabilty.
The sub turns up to 12 and we watch things with it set on either 9 or 10 which gives plenty of background bass.
We also have the sounds set on clear audio + for some films and movie for others.

Thanks for that, there could be an element of 70+ deafness but not that bad. Have tried locating the soundbar in various positions within the length of the optical cable, so limited and placed in front of the TV appears best.

A number of websites on this issue say that an HDI cable is preferable to the optical cable, the supplier/installer (JL) are saying the opposite. We'll see what an independent 'expert' has to say later in the week.

Ive had both optical and now HDMI. I cant say I've noticed any difference in the quality of the audio.

Also have a play with your DSP settings as these can make a big difference to your volume levels. I tend to leave mine on MCH stereo for example however if I switch to dolby, the decibel level reduces at least 2-3 times.

Thanks for the info.

I'm guessing this is soundbar remote 'AMP MENU' function, which I'll have a play with some of the more simpler functions.

Just looking at the Sony Instructions again and it would appear that using the HDMI control setup would at least turn the soundbar on/off along with the TV using the Sky remote.
 
Just to conclude the saga, an 'expert' came today, fairly quickly installed a new HDMI cable between the soundbar and TV via the ARC ports, discarded the optical cable, reprogrammed whatever and now the system works totally via the Sky remote. At least there were no more charges over the installation fee of £50.00
The volume level is what it is, still not over-impressed but I guess we'll live with it, maybe even discard the sub-woofer bit.

On my system I find the sub-woofer makes a big difference not only to bass but also to speech but then again mine is a 7.1 "virtual" system so its that surprising something extra comes through it.

I do think the DSP setting will make a difference though, glad your controls are all sorted now :thumbsup:

I'm with you on this one Blue, the DSP settings make a difference and the sub is great for those added extra sounds.

Not sure whats up with your setup ekim :?
