I have a HTPC and NAS running XBMC/KODI with around 20tb of HD space so I rip them to HD's and leave them on the shelf.
DVD's all boxed up in the Attic.
 
Whenever I replace any of my audio visual kit I usually buy a copy of What Hi Fi Sound & Vision.

These guys are the true geeks of this world & I usually buy on their recommendations.

Their 5 star ratings cover all budgets..worth a read & then a search for the best price on what they recommend :thumbsup:
 
RS are doing the Samsung UE50H5000 for £399 .. no swivel but ticks all other boxes!

Shame my LG buyer was a no show (stupid ebay bid and forgetters!)

Paul.....I have the TH-50PZ70B. When purchased it was only bettered by the sublime Pioneer Kuro's but they were twice the price.
Never had a problem with the set but getting the itch for a new one.
Like you I've kept with my Plasma but the OLED's are getting me excited.
Will hang on for 4k support for some sort of future proofing.

I have the same Panasonic plasma, it still looks great and has never had a problem, it's on 12800 hours now.
 
Well I went to look at the Samsung UE48H6400 and its a decent set. It does swivel, but in comparison to the LG 50LB650V does not give you as much bang for your buck and the finish is not as nice.

Unfortunately the LG was completely sold out in London and the next 400 ordered units have also been sold out!

So we started looking at the LG 49UB820V 4K set, which at just £650 is very impressive (no swivel but has everything else).

This prompted the salesman at currys to advise it may be worth waiting a few days for the new year sales so I may do that for the mo as we have 3 TVs at home and one was not being used. So a little re-shuffle has allowed me to put a 40" Sammy in my room for now as a stop gap..

Will update what I / we decide to do as the 4k LG would fit nicely downstairs but I find the 40" a little small in my room..
 
I bought a Samsung UE50H5500 yesterday from Currys for £529
Set it all up this morning and I'm very impressed with the picture quality and smart tv fasility.
It has freeview HD which is as good as my sky HD picture.
The sound like most modern tv's is lacking, it isn't too bad when i'm watching just normal ariel digital hd tv channels but is a little poor on satalite channels but this is not the tv's fault but how the sky box sends it's audio signal.

I'm now looking at getting a sound bar.
I like the deep sound of SONOS sound bar and it being able to play music streamed from any of my divices, the only problem with it is the price at £599 :(

Anyone on here have a SONOS sound bar or know of another that is as good as but cheaper ??
 
Timely thread. Just been out looking at 48"-50" tv's this afternoon. I too am the so far happy owner of a £3,000 Panasonic plasma, but at 6-7 years old want to move on.

Seems to be a wide selection of last generation LED's in the sales right now at around £500 (have wider frames and seemingly slower refresh rates, plus I'm sure other stuff).
John Lewis do a nice unit at £699 with built in sound bar which is an LG TV and has 5 year warranty. Sort of have one eye on that for the moment.
Still looking and will wait to see what offers are around when the herd are all spent up :)

Questions for you experts - what refresh rate is adequate to watch HD TV? Bottom end seems to be 50/100 but even reasonable price TV's have 800.

Is Sky HD good enough to justify a 4k set? I don't buy blue ray DVD, so would it be a waste or am I missing something?

Most things are broadcast in up to 60hz through your tv provider, I dont know about hi-res content but from what I know refresh rates are really only applicable when talking about fast moving images like sports or films. So again 100Hz should be more than adequate but manufacturers have taken liberties with the figures claiming above and beyond 900Hz "processing rate" which is a different scale all together.

I am only going to use my set for virgin tv and PC connectivity for downloaded tv shows and movies. So I virtually never go above 1080p content, no need for smart, 3D, etc etc. But your requirements may be different.

As far as I know netflix, youtube and a few xxx sites are the only people currently with any limited 4k content. I dont know about Blu-Ray but I thought the max on that was 1080p.

Hence 4k really will only serve for future proofing or the above or if you get some content with your tv like samsung were giving HDDs with some of theirs.

I've had 2 soundbars both Yamaha and both fantastic. The YSP-2200 I have now was the absolute best on the market a few years ago. I definitely recommend any of their range as my entry level HTY-750 I bought some years ago at a budget £100 is still amazing.

I looked at the UE50H5500 looks a reasonable set but the LG mentioned previously gives you so much more functionality for your money..
 
cj10jeeper, if you keep your set for 7 years again I would go for the high tech now rather then being in a position in say 3 years time where 4K is the norm and you have an "old" set.


No real 4k content available now.

So high refresh rates are probably 'nice to have for normal 1080 content.. 4k just a future proof for now.

I doubt keep the next tv more than 5 years. Bit like laptops. No matter how good you buy today in 3 years it'll be slow and 5 obsolete. Probably go curved screen before then

Curved seems like a 'no' then.
Same as 3D which seems no more than a gimmick now, but a few years ago was the future.
