35is vs M40i

My wife said I looked better in 35 than in 40. Very sweet of her. But I think I know what she meant.

I went from a 35is to a M30i and wouldn't switch back. Did like the 6 pot and as soon as I can pick the right timing with regard to STMBO will be looking at the M40i

Never had a 35is or an M40i Z4, but had both the N54 and B58 engines in 3 and 4 series BMs. The B58 is a much, much better engine for many reasons.

Has anyone taken the leap. Is the M40i that much better?

Aha!

Define better?

Better handling? Yes
More comfortable? Yes
Roomier? Yes
More tech? Yes
Faster? Yes
More reliable? Yes

Prettier?
Classier?

:tumbleweed: :tumbleweed: :tumbleweed:

Actually I’m disqualified as I didn’t take the leap…

IMO better in every way and I like how it looks. :D

The list that Peter has given and said yes too are correct 👍 the next two are in the eye of the beholder

I’ve done nearly 40k in my two and they’ve been reasonably hard miles. Either European trips, forum runs or weekends/trips away for me and the OH. It’s never been a daily, but could easily be if you wanted it too.

The room both in the cabin and boot are next level. I’m 6’2 and could never quite get the right position in the E89. Felt the seat could’ve gone back another inch or two. G29 I have room behind the seat. Don’t keep bumping into OH on the central console. The boot space is hugely important to us. We had enough room for a months worth of stuff when we recently toured Spain and Portugal.

The acceleration is mind blowing even though on paper they look similar, the torque makes overtaking an absolute breeze. The box and engine are perfectly matched imo. It thinks quicker than I do so I’m very happy. The power and torque band always means you’re in the right gear. Can be driven in Sports + as a full manual without auto change up. I could’ve changed my order to manual before build date, gave it very little thought and carried on with existing order.

Handling is great, but by fcuk sore on tyres. I don’t care about that, it’s a running cost of the car as far as I’m concerned. The E89 always felt meh as far as handling when driving on the limit. G29 much more compliant and confidence inducing and my E89 had new shocks all round when I got it (within 3k to the week before)

A strange thing for a car like this but when you just want to cruise very fuel efficient. On our trip to Spain set the cruise at 97 (I think) and the fuel consumption went up

To sum up and answer your question, Personally I wouldn’t take another E89 if someone gave me one over my G29.

If I was changing again and they were still making them I’d get another. Didn’t like the Boxster, felt like I was wearing it rather than sitting in it but I’m a big lad, that doesn’t reflect in the G29. HTH

I would agree with B21 in all respects. The B58 in my M240i is lovely and the tech of that time (eg good but without the nannying of new M40is - like all new cars) is the pinnacle of technology in my view. However, the E89 (depending on colour and spec) looks amazing. Mine is a white MSport Highline with 35is grills and red leather and it truly always makes me look back at it and think wow. And I have an i8 too and I still love it more as a looker. The G29 just is too fussy and meh, although this is also colour dependent and I do like the interior. So for the £11k that my E89 3.0 is worth, I will keep it and spend the extra £20k needed for a secondhand replacement on something else

M40i is using at least one platform tech down from current, if not more. Exactly the same tech in the 19 plate as my 21 & 24 plates. What age is your 240i?

Makes me laugh that one of the most recurring theme’s on here is folks trying to update their “outdated tech” up to the same functionality to the G29 but the old technology is preferred

As I said in my previous response, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I’ve look back at my G29’s at least as much as the E89, still makes me smile each time I see it and more so when I drive it :driving:

Argyll Andy - i thought all new registered cars had lane assist etc. spot on if the new G29 doesn’t have it but I suspect it has to. My 240 is the very last of the f22s so has no nannying whatsoever. Modern cars are becoming increasingly awful in many respects so enjoy the G29 as it’s the last you will see. I am happy with my little collection. I might get a z8 though. But some cars need to go to finance it. But a 2022 on car. Nah.

I didn't like the G29 when it came out, thought it was ugly and there was no way I would ever own one...... I now have a G29  Luckily mine has a lot of options and the technology is fantastic, one thing it does have in common with my E89... the other half still hates it! :voodoo:

You’re like a fine wine Rich, you get better with age and grow to appreciate the finer things, like G29’s :poke:

I have to say, while extolling the E89, I do understand that the G29 is the better car and I know if I had one I would love it…… frozen orange launch car would be nice but I have too many cars already. I have an E86M and it’s really quite terrible to drive in comparison to a E89 let alone a G29. But is FANTASTIC just for that reason. You just can’t buy that sort of driving (hardship/expense!) nowadays

Oh yeah my other half loves the E89 and doesn’t care much for the G29….. so I probably won’t go down the same path as zedbaron.

Agreed. People buy 20 year old E85s for a couple of quid, then spend much more because they can't live without Spotify and Carplay, or the latest hands-free phone tech.

I've probably done more miles in my M40i than most, it's now reading 48,200 miles and has it's first M.O.T. tomorrow. [ref]Argyll Andy[/ref], pretty much sums it up well, I would add just one other thing, the G29 captures some of the driving enjoyment of the original Z4, whilst it does not quite match the steering feel of the original, it makes up for it everywhere else. The e89 focused more on comfort and practicality over enjoyment, with the former carried over, especially with adaptive suspension. For me it's the best of both worlds, I can get close to 50 mpg from my weekly commute from Yorkshire to Bristol, yet be entertained on the twisties.

Overtaking capabilities are breathtaking, I've been stuck behind an artic doing 30 mph and have passed 60 mph before I've actually completed the overtake :D

Andy... fine wine, you'll be mentioning the Belgian chocolates next, just like Swiss Tony! 'Owning a BMW G29, is very much like making love to a beautiful woman. You've got to caress the bodywork. Breathe softly and gently. And give every inch of it your loving attention. And make sure you've got a nice wet sponge'

About to leave this part of the forum…bought a G29 M40i.
Delivery scheduled end of Feb.
Took me over a year to decide.
I’m sure i will miss the E89 2.3i in some way, have seen quite some asphalt together since I bought it in 2019!
Looking forward to the performance and tech step up.

G29 now a lot better now that BMWUK is offering manuals in all colours not just green. Could I be tempted??!
