35is vs M40i

G29 now a lot better now that BMWUK is offering manuals in all colours not just green. Could I be tempted??!
Makes it a much more enticing car IMO, especially as they seem to be giving good incentives and discounts aswell. Up-side of cars not selling. Downside will still be heavy depreciation IMO. But then the window of not losing lots of money on any car was very small and has shut for good now IMO.

Still a long way to go with the pricing IMO, especially when I just got 25% discount on a brand new car, which was less than half the price of an M40i (and has every extra that BM charge for included except a folding roof. And is better handling and arguably more fun to drive).

There are some seriously cheap new car deals going around at present; how about an RS3 or a Golf R for £280 a month on a contract lease for example?

But it's not really £280 per month - there's a bit of man maths going on there :D

Depends on your circumstances and what you can claim for.
Also, it was just an example of how cheap many cars are at the moment, which is a sign of the new car market being terrible.

My branch sold a branch record 153 cars last month.

they are all beautiful but personally i prefer the look of the E89, mainly because i cant afford a G29. I prefer it to look stock but updating to an MMI box gives you the best of both (it has latest audio tech and still looks like it did when it came out the showroom). The rest of the tech you can keep, speed limit warnings, lane/parking assist etc. and as for autonomous, that can f*** o**, i buy a car to drive it.

Had both with a couple of Cayman's in between. IMHO the M40i is twice the car of a 35is. I can't think of one aspect of the 35is which is better than the M40i. Each to their own of course.

Of course anyone who has moved from the 35iS to the M40i is going to say the latter is better. Doesn't mean they're wrong though.

While the 35iS (and the N54 itself) comes in for unfair criticism at times, the M40i has improved on most if not all of the 35iS' weaknesses.

I do prefer the looks of the E89, but that's entirely personal and everyone will have their own view.

If I'm in a position to have a fun car again in the future, a frozen orange M40i will probably be top of the shopping list.

The other question is, what do you want an M40i for…?

Reason for the question is when I had an M40i after around 5 35is’s, I really only wanted it for hooning, the odd trip to the coast or shows etc, but mostly for evening scoots out when the traffic had gone home. They’re a better car in all areas yes, apart from, for me anyway; I prefer the DCT box, there’s a great upshift crack at 4250 revs on the 35, and it feels significantly smaller than the G29 on the road, a big plus. Honestly I got a bit bored of it for what I wanted it for so got rid at the start of Covid, because in between I’d bought a 35i manual high mileage project car, onto which I’ve put coil overs, front and rear H&R anti roll bars, adjustable drop links all round, M3 control arms, some bushes etc, which have transformed it, it feels really quite light, which it isn’t but it feels it, small-ish and nimble. No MX5 of course, but still a great fun car that feels nothing like standard.
I’d love another M40i, and now they’ve finally seen sense and given a full colour range on the manual it’s very tempting, bar the very fat Boxy 4.0 gts fly in the ointment, but that’s for another time…..
My main point here is obvs M40i second hand prices are well into the 30’s now, £35k will get you a very nice one, however, depending on your needs and coin available, and if you’re open minded on modifying, a 35i/s can be made into a very capable car for a lot less outlay, and purely in my opinion, if you just want something for quick fun, I wouldn’t bother with the G29 despite how good they are, they’re just too big and not nimble enough. The other aspect, again for me anyway, is if I went G29 again, I’d have to have a little nimble something to go with it, hence I’m keeping my MR2 in case I get too tempted by a sensible-ish car, but before that I may retire the 35i and swap the suspension goodies to my 35is, see how that fares this year. As, said, depends what you want one for. IMHO anyway….
