20i Remap

Hi all,

I've been quoted £395 by Celtic Tuning to remap my Zed... They claim an increase of 50bhp and 50lbft which sounds very interesting and worthwhile. I've been looking on forums and tuning sites for ages but haven't been able to find anything!

I wondered if anyone has any experience of Celtic Tuning (and of their mobile service), or the risks/pitfalls of remapping as I'm new to this and don't want my car to blow up!

The 28i has 245bhp so I'd assume the 20i could cope with 234bhp!

Ps before anyone tells me I should have just bought a 28i (I know  ), I got the car as a pre-reg last February with 5 miles on the clock for £22k. The car would have been £38 brand new, too good a bargain to pass up!

Only issues are the warranty issues. If it all goes wrong, and you end up with a goosed engine, are you prepared to take the hit to repair it? I'm pretty sure BMW would just wash their hands of it so you'd potentially be left with a huge bill.

Is that Mineral White by the way? I have a Mineral White 28i and it looks a very similar colour. 8)

I looked into the tmc tuning box. Interested how you get on. It's plug in and remove and they say can't be detected when removed

Thanks for the replies!

It's some-kind-of-silver, although I've seen a mineral white one and it was very nice! I've had a reply from Celtic regarding warranty and other things, they've said;

"With regards to your car, if it is within the manufactures three year warranty we will supply a supplement warranty of one year which will sit alongside the BMW warranty.

We cannot 100% Guarantee that the remap is undetectable by the dealership, but I can say that I have never had a BMW dealer find one yet. If the vehicle would get flashed back to standard we would then charge you a £75 call out fee to re-install the software."

I might risk it as they offer some sort of warranty, although if it does go bang I'll cry a lot! I've been frustrated by the lack of information, the only thing I've found is the Hartge tuning box for 2 grand, but that only goes to 218bhp! Hardly sounds worth it...

hmmm interesting thread. I like the look of that TMC kit.
Congrats on the deal you got mikey, beautiful car and the contrasting roof really sets it apart  8)

Hmmmm interesting figures however the 28i gets it's figures thanks to a turbo, I'd be sceptical about a 50bhp increase in a petrol n/a engine.

All the N20 configs in the Z4 have a turbo, and I'm pretty sure this has been stated in several previous threads that it's the same turbo, the part numbers being identical between the 20i and the 28i.

So it is! Now in that case all are listed as TwinPower Turbo'. If they are the same turbo with no difference then yes ity should be do-able but will need to be declared and as advised if it goes to pot then you will be left to foot the bill.

I wouldn't expect you to need to have the system software updated but I had this in my prev car for a few issues to be ironed out, like issue with the bluetooth system, luckily in prev cars where I had a ecu mapping I had the tools to sort this myself

nice car

Depending on what the insurance comp says then yes you may well be right. They don't take too kindly to mods and love to charge way over the odds even if a 28i is still 'faster'

I assume you have checked with your insurance company how much this possibly modification will cost you?

I did check mine and it looked like about £100 extra when I did the quotes although I haven't done it yet but company to company will very I used go compare or something like that

Can you not get a plug and play map?

Def worth remapping on FI. The N20 uses a twin scroll turbo basically have two exhaust gas inlets one for quick response and one for peak performance.

You can get plug and play like the one I have suggested. It can be removed easily but the risk of not declaring it on your insurance is say you have a crash and for whatever reason you can't remove it then it could be seen and invalidate your insurance

Really interested to read that Celtic are offering a remap as Ive being keeping an eye out for a remap option for the 20i for when my warranty expires.

My wife has a Honda Civic Type S Diesel and as a result I am also a member of Civinfo forum where Celtic have a fantastic reputation for both the quality of their remaps in terms of power and torque delivery and for the service they provide. I haven't actually used them personally, but all the reviews on Civinfo rate them very highly.

Hope this helps :D

How did you, get on?

Been looking at jb4 as i had one my previoise 335i

but there nonreal news over the last 18 months -as the jb4 allows you to check error codes etc

Ive still got 12 months warranty left so ive not had it done yet but I will go down that route if Celtic Tuning do offer the service. When I first joined the Z4 forum there was a long thread that concluded with one individual insisting that he'd compare the part numbers for both 20i and 28i regarding engine and brakes and the the only difference was the injectors. If this is the case reliability should be completely unaffected
