As long as I keep my mouth shut, does the name allow me across the border? :)

Sorry I'm late to this thread - heck I forward plan for a living but discussing 2013 meets already ?

I have a number of ideas, some of which include some sections already mentioned and as discussed with some forumites at last scottish meet, as one of the "usual suspects" I appreciate it's about my turn to organise a run so I'll be happy to organise the "big one" for 2013 once we've chewed it over and of course Bing as suggested some dates he can make !

I agree with earlier comments re Mull - probably not worth it & whilst I like Campbeltown area the road up "the other side" from memory is not great. I have driven to John O'G a while back - in Mrs jax' new miami blue 205GTi (showing our age there)and the roads are (were) good but as mentioned the place itself lacks character and most other features !

Some other off the wall thoughts include Isle of Man, a cross border raid into Wales and the mysterious EVO triangle or maybe even a EuroZed trip......looking forward to discussing more. I do like the idea of the far North West coasts of Scotland, Ullapool, Achiltibuie, Summer Isles . . . . . .

I think there is one pub in Campbeltown
Pretty sure Campbeltown has the one if the highest pub counts per capita in Scotland! Albeit that most of them are ones you wouldn't want to go to!
I would recommend Tyndrum (A85), south along Loch Awe on the A819after Dalmally to Invararay, on to lochGilphead, then all the way to campbeltown on the A83. the section from Tarbert (Loch Fyne) to Campbeltown is epic.
Retrace steps, then either Claonaig for the Ferry to Arran or to Tarbert for the ferry to Portavadie.(great marina / restaurant) , then through Argyll towards Dunoon. (can either go direct (B836 ~25miles of reasonably good, but narrow single track road) or he roundabout way via the A886 through Glendaruel to Struchur, then S on theA815 to dunoon.

Hmm,
Just mapped out a route from Stirling -Oban -inverness -Ullapool -Durness -John o groats -Wick -Inverness -Tomintoul -Braemar -Blairgowrie -Perth.
750 miles, I might look at doing this as a road trip for me and SWMBO next year and take a week off to do it.

Well worth doing if you've not done it before. We did similar a few years ago but with a twist - we included the west-coast islands: Falkirk - Dornoch - Durness - Ullapool - ferry to Lewis - Harris - North Uist - South Uist - ferry to Oban - Falkirk. We didn't bother with John O Groats as I've been told I'd not be missing much! The Outer Hebrides were awesome though, the scenery is great: http://www.flickr.com/photos/a11y_m/sets/72157621827376993/

We had the full tour of Scotland planned last summer but other things got in the way and it's been postponed. Still eager to spend some time driving up the West Coast.

Some good suggestions so far

Has a circular been done before, say stopping at two different sites en route?

Some great shots in there a11y
The luxury hotel room at journeys end was funny, but my fave shot was the sheep in the middle of the road staring you down.

Was it all wild camping or did you do sites as well. Def want to do something like that with SWMBO next year if we don't go abroad, we are toying with the idea and possibility of the Maldives if finances allow, but tbh a week in the Z on a journey like that would get my vote.
Thanks for sharing the pics.

Totally off topic, and it ain't cheap, but if you get a chance to do this then you should. I spent two weeks there many years ago and I swear that it was one of the most idyllic holidays I have ever been on. Like arriving in the holiday brochure. Went to an island called Meerufenfushi and it was magical from the moment we stepped off the motorboat we had to take from the airport and saw baby reef sharks swimming in the shallows. Nice

Just been told that if this big trip happens then I am to be home to go on it. There are some spectacular places to see even if the roads aren't that good if you get off the beaten track a little bit.
I know Jack and I had a quick look at ferry prices to NI but the cost would probably be prohibitive, and folllowing on from some of Jax's off the wall suggestions just had a quick look at the Steam Racket Company fares for the Isle of Man and a standard 5 return is currently from £250 to £350 to for a car and 2 passengers but there does seem to be various special offers, just not sure how they work.

Would be happy to guide you chaps around some of North Wales as sammyz's introduced me to many cracking roads around Bala, Snowdonia and the mythical triangle (where it's best to do just two sides then U turn back - trust me) and no doubt we'd get quite a crowd gathered.

How about coming down to the National en-masse in 2013 - or talking Craig into moving the national further north?

In the meantime how about something else in 2012 a little bit further south than Applecross?!

I love the sheep pic - the fecker just wouldn't move out of the way, stood there for at least 30secs with one ear up and one ear down...

Happy to be of help in planning if you're after suggestions - e-mail me or pop over sometime for a brew. The luxury hotel is certainly the way forward (Oban Caledonian - we got engaged there years ago) but campsites are fine - no rough camping on this trip. The Durness campsite on the clifftop is truly stunning.

I went across from aberdeenshire last summer up to inverness (via the lecht) then across to ullapool and up to durness where there is a nice hotel and a camping barn then the next day went across the top to wick and then down the eastern coast to inverness and then back to aberdeen - sun shone all day - which i did not make the most of in a discovery :headbang:

The road from ullapool up to durness is stunning as was the road across the top and back down to inverness has its moments - saw the morgan owners club out and about on it.

Right, thats Applecross done, Whats next on the Scottish agenda for 2012

Continuing from my post in the wrong thread... Looks like Wee Bing will be coming to Scotland on the 24th August and returning 1st or 2nd September. Needs final confirmation with my Dad and SWMBO. So, whilst understanding it is holiday season (Scottish schools are back earlier than English though IIRC ?), I am thinking that I could drive up with him on the 24th, hoon on the 25th and/or 26th, then back down on the 26th or 27th. TBH I wouldn't expect a whole weekend planned around me  but hopefully there might be a few people around for a decent drive ?

 was intended for early thoughts on 2013, but no harm in talking about remainder of 2012 I suppose
