2013 BMW Z4 revealed

Headlights will no doubt be insanely expensive, the current ones are £800+ each, the new ones being LED and all that, even if they are a straight swap, will likely be more. They are bringing in the 18i though which I feel will damage residuals. Too many models. A small engine emphasising how expensive the top models are etc..

The smaller engined Z's are always going to be a bit of a compromise, but I'm sure it will sell well, you've only got to look back at the smaller engined Z3's. That mpg figure is not to be sneezed at. It's a great looking car, especially with the black roof and I love the interior.

Just doesn't seem right a Z4 being made with less horsepower than a MINI Copper S Works! The MINI would walk all over it on the road!

Nothing to dramatic on the changes, surprised with the 1.8 variant which seems pointless and amazed that still there is no diesel version and certainly don't regret the choice I made.

As the design ages BMW seek out new buyer's by freshening up the range and lowering the price of entry.

Did it with the E85, doing with the current one and will do it with the all new one when it arrives. Fact of life. How to run a succesful car company. :)

That being said I cannot see much difference in the pre/post facelift current models from the front atleast.

Yeah suppose they will be expensive for mere headlights.

For me the 18i isn't really any worse for the brand than the 20i although I can't really see what the market for it is, it seems too similar to the 20i. Unless the standard kit is going to be lesser for the 18i?

Me too, I'm very surprised by this.

The moment they bring out a clattery-van diesel (sounds like an actors name!) in the e89, is the moment I get something else...

The current 3.0 diesel, especially in the 5 series, is a lovely engine, but agree with you Maniac, its not something you'ld put in a sports car. can you imaging being on a meet, with a tractor leading the way?

 No one would catch it though, as it would do a 'James Bond' when floored, leaving us all in a cloud of black smoke wondering what happened!

i would love to see them put the tri-turbo 3L diesel from the 550xd in the Z4, that would be a monster! in fact scratch that i wouldnt want to see it, it would leave my 35is standing still with all that torque and 376bhp!

Don't worry Vidge, you get it in the corners as the weight of that diesel engine would mean they'd slide off the road...

Funny that the big sellers in the TT and now SLK are the diesels, imagine the new 25d engine in the zed with 215 BHP and +50 mpg, what's not to like.

Off the cuff... No Fun to drive, not in manual cos diesels have no revs, not in auto cos theres just horrible surges as the turbo comes in. Just flat surge laden half assed power with black smoke at WOT. Add in the extra weight of a diesel engine, you can count on much more understeer too. Diesel = fun killer. :fuelfire: :trampoline:

I'm sure I can think of more, that's just my 'IMHO' for now ;)

While in many ways i agree with you Maniac, i had a 123d coupe before i was given a company car and hence bought the Z4 However that 2l 4 pot diesel is brilliant. It is very free reving (i had a manual) due to it being twin turbo there was very little or no lag at all. You could thrash the thing around and it was a lot of fun!

Yet i would regularly drive it to manchester from sussex and average over 55mpg!

While i have the pleasure of a company car i can keep the Z4, should i move job and need to be doing high milage in my own car again i would very much want a Z4 25d sdrive (or better still a Z4 40d/50d sdrive) to buy. sadly they dont exist, which would mean i would end up in a 3/4 coupe or saloon.

as a complete asside i cant imagine that the 4 pot 2l twin turbo is heavier than the 6 pot in our 35i/s ....... so handling wouldnt actually be compromised i wouldnt imagine, especially as (like the 4banger petrosl) the engine would be set so far back

fair enough! :P however i would recommend that if you get the chance take a car out that has the TT 4Pot, i think you would be surprised at how versatile that engine is :)

Performance is generally a boy thing.

The girly version will be a winner with middle aged women wanting an open top car with a tin top and a BMW badge.

What do they care about 0-60?

:telloff: :telloff: :telloff:

If that were the case why would I have spent the extra on the E350 :poke:

Maniac, I also reckon that a 25d zed fitted with the 8 speed slush box would be a mighty fine car to drive and significantly quicker than the 2.0 sdrive

As for the clatter clatter of a diesel, rest assured my car does not rattle, just roars like a V8
