2.0, 2.2 or 2.5l? Economy + Value

Sounds like you have come to a decision - for what it's worth I bought my 2.0l with economy in mind and find that even though I use all the performance it's still manageable in terms of petrol costs and if I want to drive like I'm driving Miss Daisy it's amazingly frugal but I don't keep to that now I'm retired (early) - no commuting for me!

The advice on the Sport option (Facelift) is very true - M sport seats steering wheel suspension and wheels makes my Zed very special - can be a bit harsh if you're not used to it though and although I don't have experience of it, the SE option might make a better commuter being slightly 'softer' and still be fun for the rest of the time. Tyres are also more expensive if you go for the staggered wheels (wider at back and lower profile all round) of the sport though cheap options are available.

Even though you think you might be pushing hard - hold out for the specs you want - there are lots out there - and for the record - I know the 6 cylinder cars are wonderful but I love my 2.0l and enjoy being able to use all of its performance more of the time - in my opinion they are still very much a drivers car and exploring the performance and capabilities, as safely as possible, on the road, is what its all about for me as it is for many forum members - good luck with your search.

Good luck sounds like you have decided well that suits your needs. I recently bought my 2.0 '07 Z4. M-sport so seats (heated) and nicer chunky multicontrols steering wheel all as standard. Was needing a little tidy but being PY I had to buy it and not regretting it at all!!

good choice

good luck with the search.... imo getting a facelift is worth it over a larger engine.. the better insulation better roof motor (although no guarantee for not failing) will be worth it

I hadn't seen anywhere that the facelift had a new roof motor? 2006 onwards, right?

All facelift had a revised roof motor enclosure. It does minimise motor issues but not a solution.

2.0i se pre facelift here. Round town, which is mostly stop start rush hour traffic she returns approx 32 mpg. Steady 80 down the motorway 40/41 mpg. Hope this helps ! The 2.0 may be a bit slower but she still looks as good :).
As for the car in the ad, not sure it is such good value. My 2005 with lovely turbine wheels, leather seats, albeit 88k on the clock, which I bought in April was 5.3k ( after haggling ) in a private sale.

Thanks for the MPG info, makes a big difference and makes me feel much more confident in taking the jump from the 118D.

Value varies from person to person I guess but for me, the 40k less on the clock and the facelift makes the car worth the extra £1k.

I have a 100 mile each way commute mainly motorways and in my 2.2 I have consistently managed 34 mpg and at a lively pace and dealing with the M25 M23 car parks during both rush hours.

:D

I personally would go for a 2.2 as that 6 cyl engine sounds so good and so much better than the 4 cyl

I agree I think the 2.0i has almost a 6 cylinder sound. I've owned three V6/I6 cars so am not deluding myself too much.

It's a good motor, quick enough for the road in almost all cases. It's very strong in 3/4 due to being quite torquey, you don't have to rev the nuts off it. And if you want to go really quick, get a bike lol.

I'm worried about my fuel economy though, 32mpg average :o

Yeah I used to get 30-33 MPG, then I read some stuff on ecomodder about driving style. Now I'm in the Mind set of "Accelerating = Bad" but "Momentum = Good".
Going to do my first full tank of eco driving, brimmed tank before I left work and computer is currently showing 49.5 MPG after 22.7 miles, can't wait to see what fuelly says in about 500 miles...

A nice exhaust + cold air induction can make a 2.0 growl enough to make the M boys envious :P

I have 2.0 . . I want the growl. . must prod MM when I can to sort me out! Then an induction.

Like above anyone can drive a fast car, but not everyone can drive a car fast!! Think ive just confused myself. . :?

It's impossible to drive fast in 2.0  even 2.5 feels slow unless slow unless you keep the revs close to the red line
