Roof wearing - any solutions?

Also for future reference.

My roof was rubbing on the rubber trim on the panel too. The rubber trim had actually worn away where the roof had rubbed it. There was a small worn patch on the roof too.
I used some black electrical tape to cover the 2cm split in the rubber trim. It actually blends in well and you have to look close to see the tape against the black rubber trim.
That was last year and the tape is still in place and the worn patch on the roof hasn't got worse.

Nice one :)

Well 2 days in and the adjustments to the rubber seal are holding, and so far there is still daylight between the rear rubber trim and the roof fabric and more importantly no rubbing, so I am really chuffed that at least one thing on the zed was an easy fix for me :D

Nice one Swiftly,

Now I'm back from the National I'm going to take a look at this - will let you know how I get on - my wear marks are getting worse.

:driving:

Well I've taken a look and also managed to work the rubber seal back clear of the fabric hood when it folds down - I'll keep an eye on the gap and see if it springs back out - but for now - Thanks Swiftly!

That's great Paul, I bet you thought like me the rubber seal looked okay when you first looked at it, but the seal can be pushed back a few millimetres which is all that is required. Mine is still fine and the seal hasn't moved, but like you I am monitoring it for the time being.

To be honest Nick I thought it was something more mechanical causing the wear - amazed to find it was the rubber strip :(

It'll be interesting to see if it holds - needs to as the wear rate was worrying.

I already had a wee hole on the passenger side which I inherited when I bought the car, and was very close to getting a wee hole on the passenger side as well. I was surprised how quick the wear was

Very slight marks starting on mine so I'll take a look at this seal. Well spotted Mr Swiftly

Hope it works for you :)

It turned out my roof isn't touching and the seal is fine with a clear gap all round. Moving the roof down by hand it looks like it's just the way the thing is folding creases. The marks are actually small lighter smooth streaks rather than damage to the fabric and always disappear after a wash and soft brush but come back after a bit. But it was worth checking for.

I checked my seals and they appear to be fitted fine, though I'm going to have another poke around today. I will take some pics of the marks later, but they sound like yours ewazix - smooth lines rather than damaging wear.

However, when driving home yesterday with the roof down I did notice some small up and down movement of the roof itself where I could see between the roll bars it in the rear view mirror at speed. Which made me think that the wear may be related to the late 2006 onwards facelift models not having the locking mechanism to hold the roof down. I didn't have marks like these on my last car, but it was a Feb 2006 build and still had the locking mechanism. So possibly the roof moving up/down or back/forward slightly is causing it to move against the rubber ?

I think you have a very good point Bing re the lack of a locking mechanism, mine was certainly rubbing against the rubber whilst driving which I believe accelerated the wear

When I bought my zed there was a tiny hole and rub mark on the drivers side, but this had been fixed by the previous owner before I bought it. Recent rubbing has made the existing hole slightly worse :headbang:

I have taken some photos of my hood marks, not the best photos as I had to wipe the rain off the hood.

I've made it look like a fag burn, but at least it's a fag burn that isn't getting any bigger. :D

Same,

I messaged Swiftly about this as I was having the same problem.
The drivers side is worse than the passenger side but it's the crease where the roof folds and then rubs against the rubber.
Try and keep the rubber as supple as you can and make sure the roof isn't pushed up against it when it's down.

Something else to faff about with and me to worry about! :o

Resurrecting an old thread; my roof has the usual two wear marks. I checked that the rubber seal is pushed back, so I placed a couple of small patches of the "furry" side of velcro tape where the roof touches the rubber. Hopefully there should now be less rubbing friction on the roof material.

Any thoughts chaps ?20210308_084734[1].jpg

I think that’s going to lead to localised wear patches in the spots you’ve positioned those patches :?

You may well be right.
I believe my other option is to try to shift the hood a tiny bit forward, but I don't want to mess with the closing action if I can help it.

OK, changed it to electrical tape. Looks better and should be slippier.
I filled the "holes" in the roof with Stormsure rubber glue. Looks OK, but not brilliant. I'll work on it a bit.
