Service Costs

So, judst some feedback.... David Homes in Stockport excellent job.

Inspection 1 + brake fluid service + courtesy car = £680. I supplied my own oil and they also dicount 10% of the price if its +3yrs old...

They did the valve inspection and adjustment and used 4 shims to adjust.

I am very happy with the service and the price.. (well as happy as I can be with the price!) nice to know that inspection 2 isnt required for quite a long time!!!

I'm pretty new to the Z4m scene - please can anyone tell me the mileage/time intervals for the inspection 1 and inspection 2 services? My Nissan 350z used to have three different types of services - p1 (smallest), P2 (medium), p3 (biggie due every 36k miles). P1 and p2 alternate each year, until the 36k mile mark is reached and then a big p3 is due and so on. I assume it's a similar schedule for the z4 M. If inspection 2 is the biggest service, I assume inspection 1 is smaller but is there a more regular (smaller service) or is this just referred to as an "oil change service"? And how often are services due?

Up to 15k between services, variable servicing. Most people seem to get to around 12-14k between each service though.

Oil Service (c. £200)

Insp 1 (c. £600)

Oil Service (c. £200)

Insp 2 (c. £800)

There is also brake fluid once every two years (upto £60 depending on where you get it carried out) which is an easy DIY job. Mind you, so is the oil service.

I'm a big fan of independents too.

My car dropped out of warranty in March and I had the service and MOT done at a recommended indie here in Glasgow. Top notch work and great prices.

www.bmwcarspecialists.com

My two previous cars, an S2000 and an EVO VIII MR FQ300, were both serviced by independents when they came out of warranty too and I had no problem selling them on privately.

Depends who's buying the car I guess but enthusiasts like myself will appreciate quality work being done by a decent independent.

We've all read and experienced first hand some truly horrific main dealer incidents over the years as well as their sometimes laughable pricing.

Definitely agree with all your points. You have a nice selection of previous cars. Slightly off topic: how does your Z4 3.0 compare to your other previous cars?

It compares really well - for me anyways.

I think it handles better than the S2000 and for my driving ability is on a par with the EVO. In better hands the EVO would no doubt out-handle the Z4 but on any roads I've had the two on I've found the Z4 to be well up to the job.

Power wise it has the edge over the S2000 but lacks a bit behind my EVO which I had up to 400 bhp w/ 350 lb of the torques.

The EVO was great for what it was but after 2 years of driving it I wanted to go back to 2 seats and rwd similar to the S2000 and I love the Z4 Coupe shape so that was the deal.

I've had the Z4C for a year now and when I bought it I made the (apparently) grown up decision to chill out a bit and buy the 3.0 rather than the ///M. The ///M would have been on a par with the EVO as far as running costs etc and I decided to wind it back a bit.

I'm actually hankering after an ///M now though tbh but still finding it hard to justify the extra cost especially given current petrol prices etc. The white one which has just sold would have been exactly what I wanted as well but I'd have had to sell mine and chuck another 5 or 6k at it. Ah well, it'll happen eventually I suspect!

Out of curiosity I emailed the above BMW Independent in Glasgow and asked them for prices for servicing a Z4M.

Oil service £99, inspection one £130 and an inspection two service costs £180 (all prices exclude VAT).

Same as the regular Z4 aprt from the oil service which is £20 dearer. Top quality!

Which country is that in? The parts for an Inspection cost more than £130.

In theory the oil service on an ///M should be cheaper as the ///M uses less oil.

Are you sure that wasn't the price for a service on the Zebra Z4M barcode printer?

Apologies, I typed too quickly. I've edited my post above. It was the BMW Independent place here in Glasgow I emailed about the prices!

As mmm-five says, they can't possibly be correct prices for services on a Z4M even from an independent. I guess they must have misunderstood and quoted standard Z4 prices, which sound about spot on.

Yeah, you might be right. Although here's the email I sent to them which states what I'm asking them clearly enough I think.

Hi,

Could you tell me what your service costs are for a Z4 M Coupe?

I currently own a Z4 Coupe and I'm considering changing to the ///M version and just want to get an idea of running costs.

Thanks,
Billy

You're right that's perfectly clear - so it's very odd, particularly as they acknowledged the difference by saying the M oil service was £20 more!

So get out there and buy an M and hold them to their prices!

Those prices are probably correct....

However, they wont do all the checks that BMW will do and they wont check / adjust the valve clearances. They will do the basic oil change / micro filter or for inspection 2 oil change / micro filter / air filter / spark plugs.

I have spoken to 1 or 2 independentsd myself and havent found 1 yet that is willing to do the valve inspection.

I think Pete in Telford will do the valve clearances on the 'M' as part of inspection service and he seems to know exactly what he's about. Very highly regarded on this forum by all who have met him.

Darren Wood in Bredbury will definitely do the valve clearances and can vouch for the quality of his work and care

If you're anywhere between St Albans and Ipswich, then I'd recommend my guy in Earls Colne - Darjac Racing (ex Aston & Cosworth consultant engineer), who also owns both an M5 and a Skyline and has rebuilt engines on both of these. Not a big place, but you do get very personal service - just be prepared to be bored senseless about Aston Martin transmission cooling politics :P

There's a nice piece showing Darren Wood doing valve clearances in this month's BMW Car Club magazine (Straight Six, p48).

Indeed, including the warning that if your dealer does not request the car the day before the service, they are up to no good ....

Which is what I've said all along - especially to those who claim to have had a 'full' inspection 6 hours after dropping it off :punish:

I knew my BMW dealer paranoia was not unfounded :bag:
