2007 Z4C 3.0si vs 2017 Ford Mustang and 2015 640d

Was just out in the Zed to do a bit of Sunday shopping and a BMW 640d pulled up next to me on a dual carriageway...somewhere in Mexico.

I’m not the boy racer type but when the lights went green the driver of the 640d put his foot flat to the floor and naturally I followed. I was surprised as after maybe 2 seconds of flooring it my 10 and half year old Zed set pace on the 640d (however I believe the guy let off after 40mph perhaps) and so I cruised along to the next of lights.

I thought to myself “oh that was a nice bit of spirited driving” as I was sitting at the lights, when a red 67 plate Ford Mustang pulled up next to me. This guy must’ve looked at me a good 3 or 4 times whilst the light was red so I knew something was up.

As the lights changed from red I waited to see whether the Mustang would launch and to my expectation he did, but on amber. I went on green and again, like the 640d after 30mph the Zed came up from behind and passed it with ease. After about 70mph the Mustang (who unlike the 640d) was still pushing, but was a car length and a half behind. I pulled up at the next set of lights with a smug grin on myself thinking “you paid all that money for a ‘drag’ car, but couldn’t even beat a 10.5 year old Z4”.

Enjoy your Bank Holiday weekend folks.

Haha it's suprising what they can do. I'm considering a 640d after I get married as a treat to myself.. Having second thoughts now

They’re not slow but they’re not particularly fast as the guy was deffo pushing at the beginning.

But I guess those cars are more about luxury than spirited driving. I don’t know what they retail at but I would rather get something else like an E92 M3...

I guess they are just good value for money to me. I'm looking at 18k and that is bang in the middle of 92 m3 money but I have friends with e92 m3s and they aren't very reliable or particularly breath takingly fast?

Maybe he bought the Mustang because he likes the way they look?

My brother had a 2.3t one, sold it after 9 months as he said it handled like a boat. It was quick for a big car, but more show than go, in terms of driving pleasure.

I think it has been said before that if the 640d wanted to it would have toasted you on a straight.
They are rapid, quicker than a 3.0 Z and with auto hold e-brake all you have to do is floor it from the lights and it would take off.
Theres noway you could take away from a standing start faster than an auto with an auto handbrake.

There was a bloke in a Dacia today who thought he would be able to take a roundabout faster than my Zed... He exited over the curb with a big bang while I pee'd myself laughing! (And accelerated off the roundabout and past him in 3 seconds flat...)

There was also an older Focus RS who blasted past us at a good 100+, then overtook the car in front before slamming on the anchors for the speed camera, fishtailing wildly and not really in very much control. It will be a shame when he stuffs it, but I won't shed that many tears.

Most new Mustangs sold here are the ecoboost. I rented one once. Shite

The GT on the other hands was a beast

Second on the eco boost. On my honeymoon at the moment had the v6 mustang for the first leg of our honeymoon. Was pretty crap. The GT may be a beast and the mustang may be well equipped but well made and quick reactions it was not. It was lumpy and cumbersome. Looks good though.

Maybe so.

But the Z4C looks better, is faster and is cheaper.

Looks like a win win win to me :D

It wouldn’t have toasted the Coupe. As I said, the guy went before me and I managed to catch up whilst he was still pushing.

They are faster cars yes...but they don’t ‘toast’ 3.0si Zeds.

I think it was the eco boost.

According to wiki they have circa 300bhp, so I don’t understand why I was able to pull past him relatively easily. Unless it was due to his car being much heavier? Who knows, either way I wouldn’t buy one.

Sounds like you've had some fun today OP. :)

To be fair I don't think the 640d driver was really going for it - when I encountered a 640d in my first Coupe I was struggling to keep up.

But I know I'd rather being driving a Z4C!

Ditto. I couldn't believe how poor the build quality was. It wasn't very fast either. Apart from the photo opportunities on Route 66 (we were in New Mexico), it was a real disappointment.

You said yourself that you think they guy eased up after 40mph.
Toasted is the wrong word to use but you would have been beaten to 60+.
Unfortunately for you or anybody in a manual car you will lose to anybody in an auto with a more powerful engine from a standing start, there is no real skill in flooring an auto.

I leased a 2016 mustang eco boost premium package with the performance package while my zed had down time for an ess vt kit and lsd upgraded to 4.10:1 ratio.

The mustang I leased performance wise was as good as the eco boost has. I test drove a mustang gt non performance package and wife and I both got motion sick from the huge amount of body roll it has. The performance package is a must to get the best suspension they offer stock, which is still piss poor but does have good brakes to power on the eco boost.

At any rate the eco boost I had had the upgraded 3.55:1 diff ratio which is upgraded from the standard 3.31:1 at the base option.
My 03 2.5i sport zed pre s/c and diff in 0-60 pulls was about 2-2.5 car lengths slower than the mustang. After the ess vt kit and diff change it now is 1.5-2 car lengths quicker than the mustang eco boost I had. I did countless pulls in each in the same spot both pre s/c and post along with several in the mustang.

Now even more review in cornering with koni yellow adjustables eibach springs on 235/40/17 falken azinis 615k on pre s/c my zed on average took the same round about at almost double the speed of the mustang I had. I haven’t hit the round about post s/c yet and stance is now added camber on front from camber plates same as pre s/c in back but on a square 255/35/18 Toyo r1r now.

Just a tid bit on the mustang I used to run machines that cut the teeth in the ring and pins but I’m in a different department now lol.

Thanks for that, very interesting.

How are you finding your Supercharged Zed. I was considering this also but my bank account said no

An interesting fact about the 2016 and later Mustangs, the performance suspension setup was developed by the Aussies for the European variant, as it was recognised how appalling the Yank setup was.

I was doing some work for Ford about the time they were bringing it to the UK and spend some time driving the pre production V8 soft top RHD.

Not a bad car, very quick in a straight line, and quite fun on a twisty A road but not a sports car. The turn in is never sharp, it wallows more than it should and it doesn't feel like a premium car in terms of fit and finish.

The 2.3 feels better on the twisty stuff and still goes well, but doesn't make the right noises and the mid range acceleration is sadly lacking.

My lasting impression was more show than go.
