Deflated & disappointed at dealer "M" day

So i got a card through the door this week . Invite to local dealer Lloyd Colne who were having a "Fantastic M Motorsport Weekend " , full range of M cars to view & drive with all the freefood drink blahblah thrown in .
Mid morning i took a drive over & nestled in next to a fine looking M3

downhill from there with a wood fired pizza being the highlight :o
For the most part I just felt confused & seriously mislead by the whole range of cars on display , there was virtually no way until up close that you could distinguish the wheat from the chaff barring the totally killer M5 in frozen silver & that wasn't available to drive

I checked out a nice white M3 that was parked alongside a 4 series with all the same kit & tbh i thought the lesser model looked better :o its not like it used to be is it ?
I admired a few nice touches like the wing mirrors & the metal M badged seats on the M3 saloon

Signal to leave ?? That came when i clocked this yellow beauty & thought Hhhmm , now i like that a lot  only to find it was a 2.0d with all the skirts ,trims & badges  yes it looked nice but my bewilderment reached a new low & i left . Happy to drive away in my aged but paid for ///Machine

It's a shame that the special feeling is disappearing as everything becomes mass market

Yes, I had a card through last week inviting me to the local BMW "VIP" day.

I didnt bother as I could tell from the blurb it was just a get you in,sit you down and sell you a car day !

I'm not gonna lie , i don't want finance & without it i couldn't afford anything i saw so it would be a truly gifted salesman who got a deal out of me
Just not sure anymore who makes the decisions on model structure .
I was 27( 20 yrs\ago) when i bought my first BMW & it was a 3 series E30 320se because thats how it worked . You aspired & worked hard to get the 325sport knowing one day a 5 series wold be the prize
Also knowing along the way that there was a base model , a kitted model & a full fat M version
Now the showroom is more gltter than gold & i came away with zero desire for anything i saw whereas my visits 20/15/10 even 5 years ago filled me with motivation to get the next car up the ladder .
Now there appears to be no ladder :?
Gonna listen to some Cat Stevens now & wonder where it all went wrong

I have noticed every new bmw these days looks like an ///M replica tbh.

I understand why. Everyone wants the looks but not everyone wants the performance.

I have an invite for tommorrow to williams Bmw for a day of BMW motorsport !!

I think there sticking a TV on with biscuits and free pop

From the card that come through the door, I think there watching the British GP on some large outdoor screen..

Williams Stockport sent it too me, so maybe worth a ride over..

Bmw salesman only ever look at me with distaste as my scruffy arse sidles through the showroom..I always get classed as a " no sale" ...

haha, a year or so back I was in a car buying dilemma as my employer stipulated <5 years old on their car allowance policy. I resent paying for something on the steep bit of a depreciation curve so was truly in the dark as to what to do.

anyway, ummed and ahhed over a newish audi tts or rs, it was the visit to the dealer that helped me decide on my route. been to b&q or somewhere so wasn't looking my best, but the way they dealt with me.... f*cking hell, bunch of jumped up dicks. never again!

Haha , my mate is a salesman at Bowkers & if you knew the contempt they actually have for the majority of the customers you'd never return even for a free pizza , total smarm until the payments taken rapidly followed by total disdain . I like hearing his stories as it confirms to me why i prefer to buy private , my wallet is safer & my pants remain around my waist

Got to say Bowkers didn't go down well with my Mrs and I a few years back. Went to see an AUC e46 320i, which we did end up buying but not on account of any of the sales staff.... Horrible lot. Still, they did take in the ladyfriend's rusty SLK 230 in p/x so not all bad.

Clever set up at Bowkers means they actively seek your PX vehicles although they obviously won't let that come across .
After they set up Bowker Ribble near Mellor ( selling used prestige vehicles) they needed to source decent German motors to sell & rather than have to buy in through the trade they found taking trade-ins of the right sort of car provided a never ending supply . Good business

that's where I usually head to buy now, guessing most of their punters are buying on finance which is where they probably offer the most convenience...

fortunately I had it hammered into me even when I bought my first mountain bike - save first, buy later!

I must admit I'm with you there Andy. I walk into a showrom and rather than being overwhelmed like a kid in a sweet shop anymore, I look at the cars and think far more realistically that I wouldnt want to pay that money for that car.

A few years back I would have just looked at the car in there and gathered every penny I could have just to drive it out the showroom.

I remember 3-4 years ago having a budget of £30k for a family car and feeling awfull that with that much money to spend, I couldnt get excited over anything on the road. I eventually bought a 5 series Touring and even 3 years on, there's nothing else on the road that excites me enough to embark on another payment journey. I'm happy with the combination of 5 and Z that I'm driving. Perhaps the fact that you could afford it (somehow) takes away the lure ?

We must be getting old !!

I always know what I want so I don't even go to the showroom at all. All last 6 new cars I bought were signed for in my office, did not even go in the showroom. The Abarth was ordered unseen new, flew into the west country to pick it up and that was the first time I even met the dealer :)

There is nothing in a showroom that really interests me anymore.

Agree on all points A , i'm also guilty of looking at them as a depreciating asset & comparing to what could be bought for similar if not less money ?
