Main Display Shutting Off?

OK, so this has now happened 3 times in the past few weeks.

Driving along. Iphone in charging cradle. Using Carplay for satnav. Listening to radio. My phone gets warm/hot but not too hot to touch when charging.

My main display shuts off completely all of a sudden. Screen goes completely black. Oddly, the ‘centre’ screen in my dashboard which I have set to display the BMW map also goes off. The rest of the dashboard is unaffected.

Within about 3 or 4 seconds it ‘reboots’. Reconnects to phone, but radio reboots to a different channel. Screen re-appears (main display screen and also the little ‘mid’ screen on the dash).

What the heck is going on? Any clues?
Is the car doing a software reboot while I’m driving? 3 times in 2 weeks?

Sounds like a software issue.
Have you got any software updates due in the mybmw
App?

Failing that, I suggest booking into BMW.

Thanks - going to leave the phone out of the charging cradle for a bit and see if it recurs.

No software updates pending that I can see.

If you’re using the bmw wireless charging, phone always overheats and messes things up.

Use it every time i'm in the car, never had an issue.

Don’t have it now, but when I did if I was on a longer journey using maps and on a call, the phone would always overheat.

Maybe they fixed it?

Happened again today. All black screen.

Lifted phone out of charging cradle and system restarted. Funny thing is i don't think its heat as twice its happened within 5 minutes of startingbthe car from cold.

I cant help thinking there is a link with the charging cradle and this random reboot.

Hope this fixes itself. I had a similar problem on my 335d, started going black then it stayed black. Complete new head computer ! I raised my voice a bit about BMW quality in their busy salesroom (it was just our of warranty) and got it for half price.

Update.
Had the error a few weeks back - the phone was NOT in the charging tray this time.

I can live with it I guess but will mention at next service.

Mine does the same cuts out and goes black but only with apple CarPlay I just presume it’s when the phone loses data signal .

I’m on my second g29 now, never experienced this problem with either of them.

I usually put my Google Pixel phone in the charger, it gets slightly warm but not excessively so.

Yeah, the phone makes a lot of difference. My Samsune Note8 got very hot, When I replaced it with a S23, that stays very cool. That might be impacting the car's electrics, who knows.

Did I head that iphone 15 was bricking if you tried to charge it on a BMW ? (haha)

Looks like the iphone 15 gets very hot without the BMW charging system:-

Much as I like most Apple products I've never been tempted by the iphone, they seem to be very 'buggy'.

Thread ressurection. I had this problem with mine - i thought it was a faulty loom, but dealer decided to replace the screen, which didnt solve the issue. Next thing they replaces rhe main media unit, which also didnt solve the problem. At the very last they swichwd the loom, and found one of the connecting plugs a bit loose..

Just for completeness -

This happened for me as noted in my original posts with or without my phone in the charging pad.

However, it hasn't happened for months now so I had just assumed a software upgrade/fix.
