Our family business produce parts for electric motors, generators etc that go into wind turbines, mining equiptment and most recently the re-started Hadron Collider. Some of this is done using a Trumpf laser cutting machine. To cut a long story short I'm trying to think of items that could be produced for the z4 on the laser cutter? The material could be any steel based material and can be cut to very strict tolerances. If anyone has any ideas (Machine Monkey????), let me know. I personally cant think of anything LOL but if we came up with something I could produce them quickly and more importantly cheaply. I had thought of a front splitter? which you could then wrap or not. Not looking to make money from it, so if anyone has an idea, let me know.

Ha ha yes the will be lots of stuff good to know. Can you also laser etch?? I would imagine you have a machine shop also?? Mills laths? if so the world is now your oyster. Where are you based??

I have spent much of my early years working at Oxford Uni building bits for the Atlas experiment. I have been out to CERN and worked underground on the LHC for a month. It was fantastic and i feel honerd to have had a part even if small. On the worlds biggest most complex machine.

Any 1 want wire eroded, spark eroded components,
I can also do that, and they can be chucked on our cnc millers and lathes

I know what you mean about CERN, it was a big deal for us, to even have been a small part of it. A large part of our work is supplying the stators/rotors that go in the motors themselves but the material (electrical steel) is also used in other applications such as the LHC, power stations, train line signalling transformers, huge under-ground mining generators for Russia etc. I had a meeting with two Russian scientists from Cern who presented to me what they required and what they do. I can honestly say 99% of it went over my head LOL but they basically made the magnets for some of the LHC with our material.

We used to use a local engineering company for the fabrication etc but with foreign labour etc, a lot of that work has gone abroad and they went out of business. Our sales office is in Stourport but all the material etc is in South Wales.

The front splitter was my initial idea but not sure if a flat piece of metal would work? I've basically been useless at thinking of something to try.

dans PM me your company details you sound like you may do stuff i may need at work one day..... do you do much with laser welding of plastics?

Hi, no unfortunately we don't do laser welding, just laser cutting steel, any shape/size.

How about fang protectors / plates for the flat underside of the front bumper to stop it scraping

Yeah!!!! That is exactly the type of thing I was thinking. If its flat, it can definitely be done, would just need measurements etc.

I will could have loads of stuff. Hows about roundels for the side indicators cut out of brushed stainless steel with the BMW logo cut out. So the logo flashes orange when you indicate??

You could even cut all the parts out for strut braces. would need a fair bit of work designing measuring and getting the program correct.

Can you laser etch??

CERN i s such a great place. And like you when talking to professors it goes over my head!!

No, can't laser etch, unfortunately. YEP, the roundels with BMW cut out would be awesome and simple to do!! I had thought of the strut braces, they presumably would need welding after cutting out the parts????? Machine Monkey I knew you would have some ideas.

this looks like a good thread to keep an eye on... like you say, I'm sure there are lots of ideas that could be done with a few practices :driving:

roundels sounds good!

Exactly what I was thinking. Next time we see Bing Perry you distract him I'll whip one off.

Errrm... would you like to rephrase that.... ?

What he said ^

Skid plate/pannel would be great for the front

What about keyrings?
Not the biggest money spinner but a lot of people might be interested.
I got a couple made when we bought ours as you cannot buy these.
